I had a 9500ci installed in my 997.1. Basics:
Display installed inside the rear view mirror. They scratched out a rectangle on the reflective coating and glued it to the glass.
Control unit is flush mounted in the lower center console section. There is a similar picture earlier in this thread. Perfect location and looks close enough to factory, other than the blue backlighting.
Speaker is inside the center console section and fires down into the cubby. It is flush mounted to the top of the cubby so it does not interfere with the storage space. They cut slits into the top of the cubby to allow the sound through.
A toggle power switch was flush mounted inside the cubby hole, also flush to the top of the cubby.
USB connector is inside the glove box. There is a similar picture earlier in this thread.

Here's a post I made a while back on the MB forum -- don't have these pics in photobucket or I'd just append here. Big key is to make sure the radar receiver is NOT behind any plastic or any other obstruction. I loved the 9500ci -- saved me many times.

Note it took my MB dealer over 20 hours to perform the install (though I did not pay more than $1,999 for the new unit + install). Although they did a great job, I may not have fared so well in the hands of someone else that had no clue.
So my last recommendation is to get the install done where they've installed in 997's successfuly before.
And...I know you've made up your mind on the 9500ci, I did just purchase a V1 + the G bracket from the bumperplugs group buy. Of course this does not protect against laser (meaning jamming it), it's a lot less $ and PA does not have laser anyways. But, it's easier to part out when/if I sell my car and I can always throw in a LI system. I'm not trying to talk you out of the 9500ci, I'm just blabbing.

Question for you guys with the 9500ci flush mounted control module.
I have a 9500ci installed in a 2007 Carrera 4s. My installer followed a "common" custom install for Porsches --- flush mounted control module in the center console and added an external power button.
Today I tried to upgrade from 1.3 to 1.6. The detector enters USB mode and is recognized by Detector Tools, but when I try to upgrade the detector I get stuck on grey popup window that says "press the power and mute buttons".
I assume there is a trick that I am missing with the number of install pictures I have seen that have a flush mounted control modules. Help???

Jason,
Whats the common problem?
The USB Detector Tools also drove me absolutely crazy, just make sure your using the latest version of the software, I believe they have 1.7 now if I am not correct, if not upload 1.5, its strange the Escort programmers are far from the best...

I'm running Detector Tools v1.6 and my detector is v1.3. I'm trying to upgrade the detector to its latest version of v1.6. I can get the 9500CI into USB mode and detector tools recgonizes it, but to complete the upgrade you need to press and hold Power + Mute at the same time to enter a boot-loader mode per Escort Tech Support. With a flush mounted control module, there is no access to the power button. I have an external rocker switch for power, but leaving that on doesn't seem to work.

ahh, i see what you mean.
I have mine in the iphone compartment and it is really annoying to hit the power switch there also. Has yours been working for highway patrol officers?
Did you try restoring the whole system first? Try defaulting all controls before the upgrade...
