Drive up to any mini owner in your 911 and see if he would trade!

That's what I say to people who come up and tell me how their WRX/370z/camaro can beat my car in a race.

I'm not sure if that's the right way to phrase the question, so I'll try it this way - I wonder if there's always been a Lotus Elise to Porsche's 911 or 356. A lighter, more purpose-built sports car. Without looking into it, I would imagine that the Porsche car of the era (any era) has always been heavier than that purpose built alternative, had more creature comforts, less road feel, etc. I think if Porsches as great, sporty, reliable, nimble, capable of driving comfortably daily, etc, but not necessarily the ultimate of any of those categories. However, IMHO, it's always been the best combination of all of those attributes. That's as true today as ever, as far as I'm concerned. Porsche still has to stay profitable, so they must move with the times.
Just my $.02
Jack, I think that what's occurred over the years is that GT cars and so called RS cars become one of the same....but you're probably correct, it probably has always been that way and now cars are so heavy, that anything from the past seems light in comparison (I'm talking German or high performance, no American Muscle).

Another big concern for companies, I'd imagine, would be that road feel translates into an exhausted driver after a couple of hours in the cabin.

Thanks for kicking me off of my soap box and bursting my bubble

This morning, Mini hired a plane to tow a banner around Porsche's North American headquarters in Atlanta with the message "Dear Porsche, Bring It! Love, Mini." This likely won't make Porsche change its mind, but it's both entertaining and good Mini PR, especially for considering the upcoming launch 2011 Mini Cooper. Here's Mini president Jim McDowell trying to up the stakes with Justin Bieber passes, the Salami of the Month Club, and other ridiculousness:

I gotta say, that youtube vid is !!!!!!

it's obviously all in good fun, and whether porsche shows up or not, I think Mini has accomplished what it set out to do. Nice job by Mini, I'm still laughing at the different shirt every 5 seconds in that video. Thanks for sharing. "do it for the children"

It may be good fun but it sounds a little desperate.

I have to believe that the music video just posted is a take-off from period 80's music videos, like from Men at Work, Human League, etc. I think it's clever/funny in that way, but that's about it.
