Thought I would post an update to my original post. I went with the iPhone 4 and it worked just fine with my 2009 C4S and PCM 3.0 (at least for the first 3 months!). It paired up the phone just fine and it downloaded the entire phonebook (about 70 contacts). After about 3 months it would sometimes (about 10% of the time) not automatically pair up the phone and I would have to do it manually. Then about a month later it would not download the phonebook at all. It did the same thing in my wife's 2009 Boxster S with PCM 3.0 and Bluetooth (while her iPhone 4 worked just fine) so now I thought it was a problem with my specific iPhone 4. Talked to Apple, did a phone software update and a phone reset, and the problem didn't seem to go away. Then last month went into the Porsche dealer for my 2-year service and asked them to be sure and do any software updates that might be needed in PCM 3.0 and now I have everything working normally again. To be honest, I am not sure if they did any software updates or not (frankly, I think I had software v1.4 previously and now I am not sure what I have because I forgot how to find it on the PCM display). Anybody know how to check what software version I have? I am not sure what is the culprit here, the phone or the car, or maybe this combination is not the best marriage of cellphone and car Bluetooth compatibility, but it is working now and I will keep my fingers crossed. I never had any problems with my old Motorola RAZR but I sure like this iPhone 4. Any other similar experiences?

If you push INFO > Options > PCM Settings > Display > Software Version (or Version Info), it should show you.

from what i read on the net 1.4.4
is most current as of Dec 2010 and people are still having problems with the phone book not showing, But say its better then before.

I had my PCM 3.0 updated last December and it is now showing v1.44. I was told that's the latest for 2009 MY. I don't know if Porsche has come out with any latest updates but I also have an iPhone 4 and it works flawlessly with PCM 3.0, even before and after the v1.44 update.

Tonka858 and TooSixy - thanks for the info. My software is still v1.4 so I need to see why my Porsche dealer service didn't update me to v1.44 on my visit last month. Thanks again.

This is very interesting as I have a 2009 997.2 S (don't know which PCM but will check) and my Samsung Omnia Windows Phone 7 REFUSES to connect. I had just assumed this is a Windows Phone problem but apparently it is neither a Windows Phone problem, nor a Samsung problem.

Will pass by my dealer in the morning and see if there is an update for my PCM!

Is it easy to add factory bluetooth if the car didn't come with it?

Update on my issue where iPhone 3GS would lose connectivity if not in use after about 30sec.

I discovered (while waiting in my car for my wife for 1hr) that the dealer had paired a blackberry phone to the car initially. I deleted that phone and now my iPhone finally stays connected all the time! After 2yrs!

I called dealer initially.. They didn't know why.
I asked of there is a software update, from v1.40.... They said no but apparently there is a v1.44 out , so why would dealership say no? Would it depend on the year of the 997.2?

Hm, well that should not be the issue if things worked correctly. Having multiple phones should allow which-ever-one pairs first to stay as 'the phone'. Since your iPhone pairs up, it should stay so, regardless of the other phone having been paired... so I'd say there is still an issue with the bluetooth-phone end of the PCM software. Folks with multiple phones they want paired would still have to fight this issue I would expect. I may find out shortly.

iPhone definitely working now. It loses connection sometimes I can see on the signal strength meter but it reconnects within 2secs.

Although it prob should not do that... Much better. Plus I have no way to fix it any more if the dealership says no further update or fix available. Not too impressed with this on a 140k cdn msrp car!

I think the iphone is a class 2 device and thus should be good for up to 10M of distance before starting to lose connectivity. On the other hand I don't know what Porsche has on their side. In any event you shouldn't be getting connection drops while driving if the phone is in your pocket or on the seat next two you. You may want to test the iphone with a desktop or laptop (remember it does have antenna issues at times) and see how it does. If you don't see anything I would then ask the dealership to test the BT module for reliability and fitment. As an aside, I haven't seen connection drops with any phone I have used.

I have a similar problem. I have an 09 and it synced the address book perfectly with first my BB and then my Motorola Atrix Droid, until recently. Now the phone book doesn't sync although HF calling works. I deleted all phones and added it back, but didn't work. Only thing I can think of is we recently upgraded to Outlook 2010 in the office. Have no clue why that would impact it but my contacts sync with Outlook.

Help!

For the android folks that are having problems transferring their phonebook.

I had the same problem with my Samsung galaxy and this is what i did.

I transferred all the contacts to my sim card and on the PCM, make sure only the SIM is selected (it doesn't work if sim and phone are selected)

then select transfer phonebook.

you should have all you contacts there.

To Rodsky -
I found through some trial and error that if my BB was locked and the auto update of the phone book was selected in PCM 3.0, then the PCM simply erased my phone book from its memory every time the car was started. In order to retreive my phone book back into PCM memory, I had to do three things to fix it.

1 - Make sure my BB was not locked when I started the car,
2 - uncheck the feature to automatically update my phone book in PCM,
3 - manually update my phone book in the PCM.

I have since turned off the auto update phone book in the PCM as my default and all is working fine, even when my BB was locked. I now have an iPhone 4s (with Outlook) and have followed the same procedure and so far no issues. No experience with Android phones though.
