Castrol 5w-50 slowed my oil burning down it seems. I have 1000 miles since last oil change and with 0w40 Mobil I would be close to needing to add oil. With Castrol 5w50 I'm not down a bar yet.

I know most of the guys that race 997's in PCA ect are useing 15w50 Mobil or they use Royal Purple or Amsoil in this weight.

From a quick search there are not a lot of places to source it from. Mobil 5w-50 really hits a big range of operating temps and is extremely versatile and sought after (up to 400 deg operating temps). My only concern would be being able to have a steady supply. However, if your indy has access to lots of it then you should have no problem.

I remember this oil from conversations regarding my M3 on some Bimmer forums and hearing it produced great results.

Agree 5w-50 hard to find locally --I've been getting it here, usually 2 boxes (12 quarts) at a time: http://store.avlube.com/mobil15w50.html

Price including shipping is competitive with 0w-40 where I live, AVLube service has been good.

How long have you been using the 5w-50 and how many miles are on your car? Thanks.

Use 0w-40 in winter, 5w-50 in summer for track, 40k miles

Thanks for all the great info. I have learned so much about oil that the local auto supply store probably think I am nut!

1. Where can you buy Castrol Syntec 5W40?
2. Would you please check your tools and let me know the proper socket and hex bit size for 997S? (I used a friend's tool to do my first oil change recently. I used 27mm socket for the filter wrench and 8mm hex bit for the drain plug. They seem to fit fine. But, I would like to make sure they are the correct ones before I purchase my own tools.)

Thanks,
Jim

Jason,

Question on the LN parts: For those of us still under CPO warranty, will the upgraded filter potentially void the warranty even though it's better? Wondering if I need to stick with the Porsche standard for now, even though I want to use the spin on filter.

I doubt it will void your warranty if your using a Porsche approved oil but you never know with Porsche.

Filter

So does this adapter let you use any filter of the shelf?
