err...don't put cigarettes in it and instead put other stuff?
My hands free set for my cell fits nicely in that little pocket instead of getting lost.

It's annoying. There is nothing -- as far as I could discover -- available to replace the ash tray even though it just slides out. I contacted Eric at Bumperplugs and he patiently explained that for the space that would be made available it would not be worth the substantial cost of making a (tiny) bin to replace the ash tray. Alas.

I happen to agree with you . I feel that the car ought to come with NO ashtray (Honda BTW does this) . If a person wants an ashtray it ought to be an ordered option and that woild place a more clear difference in resale value when one claims "non smoker" .
Porsche charges for the silliest miniscule options and yet they dump an ashtray in every car when they don't have to. It makes no sense to me . I use it for coins sometimes .

It is odd, indeed, that these cars include an ash tray as standard fare. I do value the lighter outlet there, however, for my GPS and cellphone.
I know that BumperPlugs (kudos to Eric) does make an insert which replaces the ash tray with a rubberized coin holder for the 996, not sure he's created such a feature for the 997 as of yet. I am sure he would if he knew there were interested parties.
What is so odd, is that Porsche had such a hard time giving cupholders to the 911. The mantra was "when we drive, we drive". It was inconceivable to sip a soda whilst driving a Carrera, and if you know the early 911's, you'd agree- they demanded 100% focus.
However, smoking? Well, that was part of life, and in much of the world, sadly, it still is. Funny, I guess, but Porsche included ash trays in their early cars, yet no cupholders. As far as I know the first cup-holders didn't appear until the 2nd iteration of the 996, yet ash trays have been present since the 356.

+1 I would like a rubberized coin holder there. I hate hearing the sound of loose change pinging around.

Try Spain! I opened a Bank account there some years ago and the staff smoked at their desks and in the elevators; the non-smoking section in public buses exists only if it hasn't been filled by smokers. I saw kids 12 years old buying cigarettes at the tobacco stands and, since many can't afford to buy a whole pack, they cater to them by selling them cigarettes one at a time; it was usual to see them buying 2 or 3 cigarettes. Some of those cigarettes would make even the harshest American ones seem like you are inhaling pure oxygen!
My mother-in-law had an instance in which the Bank officer who was helping her asked her to wait for a second because he had to "salir por una copita y regreso pronto. żLe traigo una?" - take a little brake outside to go get a cup wine and he'll be right back. Should I bring you one? LOL.
