Traction control or a bad Clutch?

Today I was puttin along at 35 MPH in 3rd gear and nailed the little guy.

The rpms seemed to spin up until 4,000 RPMS and then the car started to grab traction. noticing the slip, I backed off.

As if I was half in on the clutch and then let it completely out.

“my foot was off the clutch” (all the way out)

** It seemed as if the clutch was slipping or like a 4000 RPM stall torque converter.

I did not want to duplicate what just happened by stepping on the gas at such low speeds in a tall gear.

I did run the car from a roll and allowed it to red line up to 3rd gear (didn’t seem to slip)

The car has 13k miles and most of the time I baby it.

I know how to drive a standard (had them all my life and this is my 2nd 911 4s with a 6 speed)

My 2004 had a traction control button (I don’t see one on this 2007 4S)

Question:
  • Does this sound normal?
  • Does the 2007 4s have a traction control?
  • How long should the clutch last?
  • How would I check to see if this clutch is bad?

Thanks in advance

35 mph in 3rd is what like 2200 rpm's? I doubt the car has that kind of torque that low down to kick in the traction control. Are you sure you weren't just lugging it?
Sounds like the perfect conditions to find a slipping clutch.

thanks for the input, it wasnt lugging.

I agree, it was the perfect conditions to find a slipping clutch ... im hoping it has a self adjust and its NOT burnt up.

A new clutch @ 13k miles would be a JOKE

Classic symptoms of clutch slipping. Time for a new clutch. How many miles?

13,000 miles.

my last 6 speed (not a Porsche) went to 75k miles before i needed a new clutch

my last 911 4s, went to 60k miles and the clutch was still strong.

a new clutch at 13k cant be normal.

I wouldn't assume it's the clutch right away. I had a bad spark plug and it did this. My stock clutch was fine to 82k miles.

up-date...I rolled into the dealership to check it out.

The service tech got in did a 5th gear start and the car died out.
* He said if the clutch was bad, this would have slipped.

We went on a test ride.. He drove, I went to the passengers side.
He drove the car much harder than I do (all under control and safe)
No slip...

We swapped seats so I could try to duplicate the slip.

I tried to the good old 35 mph 3rd gear dump ... and NO slip.

A. Could this have been a one time slip?
B. maybe it will slip only when the clutch is cold?
C. could have it re adjusted itself or reseated?
D. Maybe i drive like an old lady and don't know squat about the power band?

I don't know, but its running fine now and if it does it again, I will run it down to the shop.

"go figure"

E. - you are new to this car and you 'ride' the clutch constantly, so it overheats it and it may cause some temporarily slippage.

no one knows. my clutch used to squeal when I was going uphill, then after several auto-x events it all stopped. there a a lot of things there that co-interact. if it does not repeat - then just ignore it for now. when shifting will go way down to subconscious level you will notice right away any abnormalities while shifting, as long as you are getting used to the car - prey you will not damage it too much.

My car did the random high gear slip last winter on a rainy, cold morning. In 4th, 5th and 6th (at 40-65mph), if I gave it enough throttle for the boost to come on, the rpms would shoot to redline and the car wouldn't gain any speed. It was a one time thing. Never happened again.

I did however have a bad oil change that caused similar symptoms. The plugs and turbos got oil on them, so it caused the exact same symptoms as that freaky one-time rpm jolt that I experienced last winter.

Something is off here. If the clutch does not slip (and the tires have grip) there's a direct fixed relation between RPMs and speed. If the RPMs shoot up and the speed does not, the clutch is slipping. On a wet road though, if the tires do not grip, that can of course happen, but you would know it.

+1
There's nothing else to cause a difference between RPM and speed. Classic way to test if your clutch is slipping though. If you are the second owner and the first owner never drove the car, probably is easier to suggest that the first owner didn't know how to drive.
