For me, the annoyance of chronic false alarms (yes, I have it in Logic mode) makes it unusable. I hear the best Escorts are much better at filtering out false alarms, but have comparable sensitivity for Ka bands.

The Escort 9500ix works pretty well - still some falses, especially from buildings that transmit on some bands: I got falses in the IKEA parking garage just lately, for example. It learns them though, so if you pass the same locations often it no longer falses on them.

That said, I don't use it much around town anymore now that the novelty has worn off. The Red Light Cam Database is nice, but I don't typically try to run a light - seems suicidal anyway in this town.

On the highway it does a good job and getting it wired up was easy enough. No problems with the cup mounts either, but I'd like to try that mirror solution mentioned above.

I have the k40 in my 911. I don't find it to be any better than the v1. I've run them side by side and the v1 picks them up farther out and tells me direction. I got the car with the k40. I wouldn't pay for it though, having driven both. Jmo.

I have to agree with your post. I have one and it sits in my house. In CA, driving down 101, it goes off constantly.

plus, it looks fugly hanging on ur windshield, rearview mirror, or visor.
Do you have a picture of what was installed inside your car for the 9500CI / where it was installed? Just when I thought I didn't have something else car-related to spend a couple of G's on, I go and read this thread and learn about the 9500CI. Damn!

The V1 has several sensitivity/filtering modes. I have had one for many users and it has never bothered me with false alerts, on 101 or wherever else. It is a fine instrument building situational awareness.

I'd love to know what mode you're using. I've tried them all and "Logic" mode seems to be the best, but it's still unacceptable to me. Mine is only about 4 years old though - might be that the older models perform differently. In any case, I tried fiddling with mine, placed it high on the windshield (as recommended) and get a boatload of false warnings.

except for the contoller which was installed closer to me (located on the right flat panel adjacent to the steering wheel)

from my understanding, u can even send the unit back to valentine and they will 'cutomize' it for u with what u need.
give them a call for specifics.

or u can try these settings:

I did it differently:

Put the LED indicator in the upper right corner of the small storage space underneath the PASM and spoiler buttons. Compared to above the steering wheel, you have to glance down to see it, but I don't usually need to look -- the audio tells me everything I need to know. No need to drill too.

The control went in the ashtray (it's a perfect fit there, easy accessible and covers when not being used -- which is 99% of the time).

The speaker and USB cord go in the driver or passenger footwell.

everytime i hear 'situational awareness' used by V1, i smile..

i know V1 is very sensitive, has a 360 deg range protection, and the arrows are handy.. and i m sure as soon as the patent/CR runs out on that arrow feature, Escort co will be all over it, no doubt.

but the arrow indicators only show the radar signals the V1 has picked up.. it does not include any LEO with radar off (most cases). Many LEO who come from behind are coming fast and usually does not have their radar on (they can clearly see from behind who is speeding or not and they will end up pacing the speeder).. so if u think ur rear is covered just because of the arrow, u may get burned..

usually, when i am speeding and i hear the radar detector go off (Ka band) i slow down immediately.. i dont care if the source is from side, rear or front (although the beeping gives me an idea if i am getting closer to the source or moving away from it.)

radar detector is just a tool to help avoid silly tickets.. the best way (besides not breaking the law) is to use real 'situational awareness'.. such as other vehicles speeds, minding down hill areas and over ramp areas, etc.. and always try to use a rabbit ( very easy to find or bait one when u r in a porsche)

safe driving !

I agree with crazy ^ if the Detector goes off and I am speeding, the situation is potentially bad, slow down NOW - then worry about if/where they are. That's all the awareness you need. It's not like we are shooting down bogeys.

And usually on the highway where I use mine, they are either in front or behind because most (all?) highways are two-dimensional. In either case, you slow down. Sure it could be from a building off the road somewhere, but buy the time you verify that, if you are wrong - too late. Best to follow the above suggestions no matter what unit you have.

Both the escort and the V1 remain pretty close performance wise in all of the reviews over the past decade. I like the escort because it auto mutes the alarm after a few seconds. The V1 requires you to do this manually.

CC - thanks again for the link to the V1 settings in CA. I didn't realize the V1 is programmable. I turned off X-band and am trying to figure out if I should just turn off K-band altogether or set a delay with override for a strong signal. From what I'm reading, seems as though there's a bit of disagreement about the prevalence of LEO use of K-band.

I was also poking around to see if anyone had installed the V1 remote in the 997 ash tray. I found plenty of pictures of the control module for the Passport being installed there, but not the V1. Seems like it would fit, but has anyone done this?

If the V1 display is too bulky or unsightly, you can try to install a remote display in the rearview mirror.

Here are a couple links DIY and installation service...
