How will these mods change the stock exhaust tone?
#3
Lots of info out there on this topic if you search this forum. Basically X51's will deepen the tone a bit and X51 with AWE cats is about 50% louder, and deeper and growlier. I'd recommend skipping the headers unless you do the cats too. If you want PSE like sound without spending the coin, and saving weight while you're at it, try a Gundo Hack (also plenty here available for search). I had it alone before adding other mods and it was a big improvement over stock, but I wanted even more volume and depth so I kept modding...
One thing is for sure -- sound is incredibly subjective and videos have limited use, so unless you hear it in person first, you are really just rolling the dice on whether you will be pleased.

i had done my car with fabspeed x-pipe and fabspeed mufflers and was forced by my best half to surrender mufflers as she heard me coming back from 3-4 blocks away and was afraid of our neighbors reaction.
x51 headers on 'S' car is a good mod, do it.

When I added X51 to my PSE it didn't change the sound much, just a slightly lower tone. I do like the sound a lot though, could go a tad louder but I'm happy with it and I won't be touching my CATs since I'm in California.

[QUOTE=utkinpol;3098903]just a word of advice - do 200 cell cats first with stock mufflers, then decide if that is 'not enough'.

New cars are exempt from smog testing for 7 years. If when you still have the car at that point, just put the stock cats back on... takes all of an hour or two.
Plus I also read on this site that sport cats will pass the sniffer test if they are warmed up.

I never understand why people feel this way.

I put sport cats on my 996 and found that the sound was exactly what I was looking for.
Trying to figure out what will sound best in an exhaust system is similar to walking into a audio shop and listening to speakers. Some people will swear by a set of $4000 speakers and the next guy will like the $800 pair.

Are you doing sport cats for your 09?

Sport cats is one consideration. However, I beleive that would require headers as well for the 09. I might go with the rear muffler delete from Sharkwerks or FVD. I'm not looking for a loud car. I'd like to get to where I was on sound in my 09 CS with the FVD export.

Keep in mind there are actually 4 cats on the car. I believe they are in the 450cpi range. Going with an aftermarket 200cpi metallic cat (just 2 of them) is the best bang for the buck, not only in sound quality but performance wise as well.
I miss my 997S
