Porsche unveils 997 - Black Edition

"black edition!"
i think the chrome silver trim should be black, would make it actually cool.

I wouldn't buy it but i don't understand why everyone is so surprised. Porsche is trying to boost sales of the 997 before the new model comes out...seems like a good business move for them. I don't think it will impact future sales as long as they keep the qualities that make a Porsche in tact.

I owned Porsches for many years and have loved all of them.
When I got out of my most recent one, I left the brand. Not to sound snobby or anything, it just seemed that with time the Porsche became less exotic and more ubiquitous.
I feel that all these "special" editions cheapen the brand.

why? they simply need to use up all spare parts left before starting 991 or however they will name it. totally understandable move, I am just not sure why they still put those engines in and do not put x51 max powered ones into each car they make now, what is the point to use weaker ones... as of options set - i think there is a market for $81K cars right now, they should sell.

Here you get a discount if you buy an all black 997. (With the badges, kind of like a blinged up Carrera.)
BTW, people will need the discount for all the detailing supplies needed to keep it clean.

It's an attractive car, for sure. I like the combo of the 19"s, sport design steering wheel, stainless door guards. And the power of this one is that it's at a significant discount! I think it's meant for 1st-time 911 owners (which I am) that are looking for a special entry-level 911. And let's face it, the S has a MSRP about $12k over the base model, which for normal road use, I'm not sure is worth it, depending on where you live. Just my 0.02.
I don't like the '911' badge on the rear though; I prefer 'Carrera'. Again, personal preference. And 19"s look better but on rough pavement 18"s work a little better.
Basically any Carrera, with a few mods, is faster than a solid 95% of your run of the mill street machines. I mean, you get to a slippery slope with 911's where you have to ask yourself, "how much is enough" ??

And another thing: for cars that are faster than mine, great, I salute you. Must be a Corvette or a GT-R, and to be honest, I still don't want either of those cars. You get to a sense of security and thick skin where that really doesn't matter too much anymore.

hmmm.. looks like a win/win situation to me.
Porsche is using up existing parts from inventory before the model change..
and marketing it as a special edition with lots of goodies people want (Bose, Navi, TurboII wheels, rear park sensors, etc) at a base carrera price..
and besides the Pcar owners, no one knows or cares how many variants of 911 there are. =)
Consumer gets a 'special' edition (even if Porsche enthusiasts disagree about the 'special' part) with options they prob get anyways at a base carrera price.
u can even prob get a good discount on them once the real 2012 911 comes out.

The point is who does a "special" base model that other than the black edition badges is not "special" at all? I dont think there is a signle thing on that car that is actually special when compaired to your standard options C2. I agree it is a good way to get rid of parts and make some excitment for new buys...but special should still mean special...which this is not.

Obviously a Porsche wasn't 'special' enough for you, which is fine, yet it works very well for me.
