Porsche unveils 997 - Black Edition

Porsche revealed today a new limited edition variant of its 911 model, dubbed Black Edition. Based on the 911 Carrera Coupe and Cabriolet, the Black Editions will be limited to just 1,911 units worldwide that will benefit from the same technical special equipment options that are offered for all Carrera models.

Finished in plain black as standard, the 911 Black Edition also comes with Basalt Black metallic available as an option. The electric-folding hood of the Cabriolet model is trimmed in black cloth.

Visual highlights of the 911 Black Edition include 19-inch 911 Turbo II forged alloy wheels, which offers us direct view to the brake discs that are paired with black-finished, four-piston aluminium monobloc fixed calipers.

Inside the car, a black leather interior complements the colour theme of the exterior. Other interior highlights include a thick-rimmed SportDesign steering wheel, a black instrument cluster, a limited edition badge on the glove compartment lid, while the decorative fascia strip, gear lever and air vents are all finished in aluminium-look paint, and the rear centre console is painted in the exterior colour.

In addition to that, a BOSE Surround Sound-System is fitted as standard, comprising 13 loudspeakers (twelve in the Cabriolet) including an active subwoofer and central speaker as well as a seven-channel digital amplifier, delivering a total output of 385W.

Also standard on the Black Edition models is satellite navigation, and a universal audio interface in the central console storage compartment that enables an MP3 player to be connected to the audio. Every 911 Black Edition also features rear ParkAssist, cruise control, automatic dimming anti-dazzle interior and exterior mirrors, and rain-sensing windscreen wipers.

Set to go on sale in the UK and Ireland this April, the 911 Black Edition will wear the same price tag as the standard 911 Carrera models. This means it will be priced from £67,270 for the Coupe and £74,958 for the Cabriolet.

In the United States, MSRP will be $81,300 for the Coupe and $91,300 for the Cabriolet, representing an approximate $6,000 MSRP savings over a similarly equipped 911 Carrera.

Guess that rounds off the total number of available 911 variants at 20.

I dont get it. Why not then make a white edition and a blue edition. Seems like nothing special has been done to this car. I am sad cause I thought it may be a bit more GTS/Speedster like.

I have that car already. I have a black 997.2 with those options. I'd rather have a GTS. WTF?

They do not have to impress existing owners.
They have to get rid of existing body panels before the 991 comes out.

You are probably right, but it's quite a simple and effective strategy to boost sales during the decline stage of a product near to end of it's lifecycle.

So now Porsche is promoting the most common color combination they make? The only thing special about the car is the badges and perhaps a discount on the options. Black on Black and Silver on Black probably account for 80%+ of the cars Porsche makes.

IMHO, Porsche marketing was out to lunch on that one... I don't see what is different from just ordering these options using the normal ordering process. At least with the Sport Classic, the GTS, and the Speedster you are getting stuff that cannot be had otherwise (a duck tail, a widebody RWD, and a cowl respectively).

I would rather vote for a rainbow edition, a pink ribbon edition and a gold "support the troops" edition...

It doesn't come in the S trim either. So it is the same thing as a base model, with some "black edition" lettering.

It's a dream come true...

Actually, not a bad price if you like that car...more of a cosmetic car than performance car being built on the base Carrera.

Just another end of run special. Not my idea of what Porsche should be doing with it's products (wouldn't be a stretch to call it the "Neiman Marcus" edition), but hopefully it fills the financial coffers.
