What is the consensus when buying a used 911 ( or any car for that matter) considering aftermarket parts upgrades? For those who have sold modded vehicles what's been your feedback? For those buying, what are your reservations?

My guess is the quality of the parts. For example, I have adjustable sway bars, which are "chatty". If I ever wanted to sell, would I need to put the originals back on.

I don't see any issue, but most mods don't add any value to a used car. I think it comes down to what you like

 

imo I feel a lot of people are turned away cause they think maybe the quality of the part, or the work done on the car may not meet the factory quality. I have seen some modded cars that i wouldn't buy and others i would. When I sold my 996, which had 3 piece wheels and a JL sound system with interior matching sub enclosures which was finished professionally and matched the car beautifully, the buyer actually loved the car how it was, including the aftermarket work done to the car... adjustable sway bars may be a pro for one buyer but a con for another. If a buyer doesn't like the adjustable sway bar, you can always mention that the car can be returned to stock form, if it was to cause a deal to fall thru...

 

it limits your potential buyer. not everyone want to buy a modified car.

it's not a big deal if it's easily reversed. catback, intake, bumpers are all easy to reverse if the stock parts are kept.

 

It depends if the buyer wants the mods. I think somethings are desirable, while others aren't to different people.

I have saved all my OEM parts (despite a number of offers to buy my stock parts) for the day that I finally bid my 997 good bye!

 

My car had great mods. Tinted glass, clear bra, lojack, and short shifter. I added clear side markers.

 

It depends on the mods... mine has the full X51 Powerkit and I believe it to be a plus, specially since a potential buyer would be paying only a fraction of its cost.

 

Suspension and wheels I'm ok with. Engine mods I'd pass on.

 

X51 is great...but it's an option, not a mod.

 

I believe it can be a mod as well. Check Suncoast. They have it listed as 'Carrera S Power Kit' for the 09 S

 

depends on the mod, i passed on a motorcycle because it was just too fast for me and had been raced.
for a 911 i'd appreciate a different exhaust, wheels and shifter, that's all i can think of off hand.

 

It depends on too many things to give a firm absolute answer . If the mods are tastefully done with high quality parts and installation and the driver was not an avid race driver .. then a modified car can actually save a lot of work and expense .

The 997S only has somewhat limited mods to begin with. Unless someone revises the entire car the basic exhaust and suspension are the most common.

On the other hand I think a modded Turbo is a huge plus . For a car shopper to drive a stock Turbo and then go out and drive a 600, 700. 800 Hp modded Turbo ? Ha ha .. he'd run to buy it.
( Of course he could buy a stock Turbo and then spend 80 grand to get it right OR he could buy a new Turbo S and do nothing to it. It won't be as fast as the modded 997.1tt but it is fast enough to remain stock.)

 

more Mods = more Problems ..

it's a rule we all got to live by.

 

I would only want to buy an already modded one -- as it saves me time, money & hassle.

Now a days, as long as the work is done by a tuner you already know of, it's all good.
I wouldn't buy one that had some hick town billy bob tuner that I've never heard of.

But if the mods are from some tuner like the ones on this site, whats the big deal?
If you are going to mod it, you are going to get the same tune or parts anyways so stop being so scared.
