So it looks like where you mounted/installed the "control" unit (between your sport and PSM buttons) only have a total of 4 buttons... sport / sport +/PSM, then the blank space followed by your PASM button. Giving you slightly more than 2 inches of a gap to install the control unit.
I am asking this because I have 5 buttons (sport/sport+/PSM ...... rear spoiler/PASM off).
Your picture does not really show the right part of this faceplate.
I really want to mimic your install, but I think I do NOT have enough space for the control unit. The dimension (length) of the control unit is just under 2 inches and I only have less than 1.5 inches.
I guess I am SOL
Your install looks fantastic!!

How does this plastic piece come out so as to install the control panel into it? Or do you even remove it?
Gorgeous install!
I went to 2 Escort dealers in my area and neither required the front bumper to come off? Is there any advantage in doing so?
Thanks!

Thanks thebland, I have no idea how they got the panel out, I had the install done by pro's... The reason to take off the bumper was so that the shifters are mounted way back to the actual bumper and not to plastic and also so that the radar receiver is behind the plastic bumper so nothing can be seen.
I am on my way to my first track day so wont be able to answer any more questions until Wednesday.... wish me luck

My local stereo shop installed the Passport 9500ci yesterday on my 997.1. As you can see in the photo, I chose the same location as Rick for the 'control' module but didn't set it 'flush' or 'recessed'.
My main reason for not doing it as Rick's was that I didn't want to disturb the on-off switch that is located above the 'control module' by design. However, the techs did pull the 997's lower control panel totally off of the front center console to drill holes for the wires that lead to the 'control module'. They showed that panel 'strip' to me and the area behind the 'empty' space does have something there, although I am not sure if it has a function. My techs just made the hole(s) for the wire without damaging anything else. As you can see, the module is set flat on that space, but it does stick out.
I also decided not to put the Passport's display panel 'hidden' in the ashtray. I wanted to see the GPS derived 'speed' at all times (to check against accuracy versus factory speedo). This is specially useful if you ever change factory wheels and/or tires and the factory-supplied guage is misleading you on your actual speed. I also needed to have a visual in direct line of sight on the alerts being displayed without having to first to open the cigarette lighter lid below & then looking down at the 'hidden' display! So we placed the display panel above the steering column and in front of the instruments (but low). An LED light was placed between the instruments clusters to 'warn' but it is not drilled in. I don't really know how they did it but I told them don't drill...and they didn't. I think they used a different LED than the one that came on the kit.
We didn't remove the front bumpers. My 997.1 has the factory Aerokit and there was no problem placing the laser 'shifters' in the openings for the oil coolers, left and right. The mounting brackets that come in the Passport kit were not used. Instead, my shop made some special brackets so that the units sit (or hang) at the proper angle. The radar detector is in the center location in front bumper.
If you look closely and bend down in front of the vehicle, the shifters can be seen. Same as rear shifter, located above rear license plate. If the law enforcement officer that stops you knows anything about laser defusers on cars, he/she will be able to detect tell-tale signs of its installation if they go out of their way to look for it. They have to prove you had it working in your vehicle when they tried to detect your speed via laser. If you are quick on your feet, they should never have a reason to stop you in the first place! That is why I chose not to got the extra effort and expense to hide all signs of installation. However, if you are a little more paranoid than me and don't mind spending the extra money for labor, then a more stealth installation is in order. z356

finally got the chance to take pics of my install done 6 months ago.. lol
as u can see, i decided to mount the display on the steering column for good visibility.. its velcroed on for easy removal.
u can also see the red/green led to the left of it - where the warning lights are between the speedo and tach
after much deliberation, i mounted the control unit to the right of the steering wheel (see pic)
i wanted quick access to the mute/laser off button and i wanted an easy access to the on/off button for updating
