iPod cable?
#17
The original iPod cable which came with 2009 models only supports charging on older iPod which used a 12V Firewire supply for power. Starting with iPhone and later iPod/iPod touch, Apple has started to use the 5V USB supply for charging. That's why we now have the newer/updated cable which tap into your existing USB port in the car just to splice in the 5V USB power for the iPhone/iPod. This cable actually came out in early 2010 but I was not able to get my dealer to throw in a free update so I ended up spending $35.
Yes, if you want to charge your iPod at the same time. Otherwise, you don't have to plug it in and the iPod will work until it runs out of juice.
All late-model iPods and iPhone require 5V to charge and that's what the USB connector is for. Older models of iPods do not have this requirement.
