I got the verdict today and it's cosmoline as many have stated . I guess I never smelled it before because if I get out of my car outdoors I don't smell it . Usually when I get out inside my garage I gather my things inside the car as opposed to jumping right out the door like i did when I smelled it .

I guess I need to drive this car more . So far it only has 7K miles and its 21 months old .

I too have that smell. I always thought it smelled like hot oil... and a bit of a rubbery smell. Reminds me of the 80's 911's. A very unique smell.

Thanks, this has been very helpful. I picked up a P-car a couple of weeks ago with 11K on it, and was wondering what that distinctive smell was. It has been to the dealer and everything checked out okay.

My '06 gets that smell in the winter when the temp drops down in the 30's. The PS2s will shed the hard rubber particles onto the mufflers inside the rear wheel housing. As the tires get older (rubber harder) they shed more of the rubber particles. This has been the 5th winter with the intermittent smell.

To quote a famous movie line . . . . . . "I love the smell of rubber or cosmoline in the morning" or something like that. (lol)

Used on undercarriage before it leaves the factory. Rust prevention.
