Tire Question

I have a 2009 997.2 that is need of new rear tires. Current tires are Michelin Pilot Sport PS2. I am considering the new Michelin Pilot Super sport. Since there is significant treadlife left on the front tires can I safely replace the rears with Michelin Pilot Super sports and continue to run the Pilot Sport PS2 on the front?

Good post. I'm in the same situation on tread wear.

No, you can't. Do a search - there are many (recent) threads on the matter. These are different tires completely.

OTOH, you can do whatever you want. But, it's a Porsche after all. Take care of it and yourself. Best,

I too an in the all four category...there is aging and hardening of the steel belts in the tires that will change the dynamics of the tire. If you have substantially different number of miles on tires, the flex will be different in turns and change the handling. I feel the same about different tire models or types, the flexing charicteristics are different. Now this is just my opinion and I am no expert...I would go with what the experts say at Tirerack or one of the other tire specialists.

I would think you could find a couple of PS2 rears at a steal, then replace all 4 with PSS when needed. The the interim have fun abusing the PS2s by trying to wear out the rears before the fronts are gone!

while we're on the topic of the new super sports, does anyone know how the treadlife warranty works? i.e., does it cover track use too? 15k miles + track use seems too good to be true

I'd do just the rears and then go for a full set when the rears go. You'll get some interesting feedback on the Super Sports in the interim.

I've heard the warranty for staggered tires is less and they don't cover track use.

You should probably go for PS2s are the rear, and then replace all four with super sports. Don't think its a good idea to mix and match...

Michelin recommends replacing all four. If you do choose to mix, do it in pairs only. They are new tires and the possibility exists that mixing could inhibit performance. There's no definitive answer here. You never know what you are going to get until you do it. Given the cars wear rears so much quicker I suspect that we will be getting some feedback shortly on what happens when you do mix.

Yeah, pretty much what they said above. Just get all four and then sale the PS2s on here to recoup some of the cost. Then, you can write a review of how you feel about the SuperSports. I'm sorta interested myself.

Damon just hooked be up with SuperSports and while I have not tracked them yet (so I'll hold final judgement until then) they, subjectively, feel like an excellent tire. Objectively, the specs are top notch and appear to be the defacto PS3's.

I'm running 305's on rear on C2S. And to the OP, "significant front treadlife" left means you're not driving your car nearly hard enough.

Oh, and change all 4............
