Thoughts About 18" Runflats...
While waiting for our C4S Cab to arrive, I have been contemplating all the things to do with the car. Besides being a semi-daily driver, my wife and I would like to travel in it. Probably not long long epic voyages, just mainly weekend trips.
I have read many posts regarding bringing a spare and all the various ways to do that, but with luggage, that is probably not very feasible for us. I have done repairs before, so a plug kit might be a handy thing to bring.
Then today I thought about getting a set of travel wheels and tires. The only experience I have had with run flats is on my little Cooper. Hated the ride and noise. I currently just run regular tires and have had no issues. But I rarely travel any long distances in the car. Now the Porsche will come with 19's, so I was wondering if I went with a smaller wheel, would that offset the harshness of the run flat?
Thanks for any input,
John

RUN FLAT AWAY from RFs no matter wheel size! I had a set on my wife's Lexus (17" wheels) and even she noticed the ride difference when I replaced them
Should you ever have a blow out in an RF, you could be stranded for days waiting for one let alone 2 in Porsche sizes... or staggered set up necessitating replacement of all 4. That being said, you could pick up a Porsche compact spare and only load it in for long trips if it'll give you better piece of mind.
Otherwise, keep up the AAA premiums and pick up a plug kit at a local parts store and enjoy the drives. Having a plug kit is akin to umbrellas... rarely if ever used when close at hand... precious gold like commodity when you need but don't have.
Good luck

My run flat experiences are on a Lexus SC430 and the ride difference is substantial. They are hard as a rock and over the period of six years and two cars we tried different brands and "new and improved" models with no success. Like Burgs suggestions above....

The issue that you will have most is finding them in appropriate sizing for the car. Aside from that most just don't do it. It will affect ride quality substantially.
Don't forget you HAVE to have a TPMS system to let you know a tire is flat if you plan to run on runflat tires.

Ok, I'm convinced!
I'm really not that overly concerned, just a thought that it might be worth the trade off if we take a long trip somewhere... I'm fine with plugging temporarily if need be, or utilizing AAA in a pinch. Truth be known, with the advances in tire technology, I don't believe I have used a spare but once in the past 10 years. I remember when I wouldn't think of traveling more than 30 miles without at least one spare in the back of the truck, preferably two!!
I'm probably just spending too much time thinking about things while waiting...
Thanks,
John
