Sport Shifter - Can you tell just by looking?
New to Porsche and was wondering how you would tell whether a 997.1 has the short shifter or not just by looking. Are there visual clues or must I measure the length of the shift to determine standard versus short?
If yes, can anyone help me out with what that measurement is (TEquipment web site at www.porsche.com only states a '20%' reduction)?

I just swapped out shifters on my 997.1 It will be difficult to tell (visually) if the car has an OEM SSK. You can definitely tell by feel. The SSK is notchier and has a shorter travel throughout the gears.
You could peel up the leather shift boot and this will reveal the part number. There is a thread on this forum that gives detailed instructions on how to do this.

If it was done with Porsche SSK kit, lift the shift boot like the following photo. If the plastic pivot block is blue then it is short shifter (left in photo). If it's black then it's stock shifter (right in photo).
But if it was retrofitted with B&N short shift kit using the stock plastic pieces, then you won't be able to tell visually...

Thanks for all the input - I probably will just go to the dealer as a 'quick fix'. However, I think I have an annoying rattle coming from the front of the console area, and that looks like I will need to lift the shift boot to get access to resolve. This might be my Memorial Day project and would provide direct visual proof.

Shift boot is easy to lift. You can do it with bare hands in as fast as the time for the light to go from red to green. Yes I've done that to show my buddy what's underneath.

Talking about Short Shifter, how do you guys like it overall? My 2006 C4S has the stock shifter which has a little bit too long a traveling to my taste and I am used to a short shifter on my BMW 540i.
What would you recommend? The Porsche device or some other aftermarket SSK? What kind of price are we talking about here?
Thank you for your inputs.
