I have not heard them refer to it as an "oil mist collector" but that should be the same part that we are referring to. I've heard "oil separator", "Air-Oil Seperator"(where AOS comes from), and "Vapor-Oil Seperator"(where VOS comes from).
Porsche's official term in their parts description in PET parts software is "oil separator", part # 996-107-026-51

Is this, AOS, VOS, oil separator (official term), on 997 and 997.2? Where is it located in the engine compartment? Is this part common on other cars or 911 specific?
Thanks.

Yes, they are installed on 997 and 997.2, but are different units and part#'s on each. They started in '97 on the 986, then on the 996, 987, Cayman, 997, 997.2, 987,2... All engines have some form of crankcase ventilation/breather control.

Well, this is where you have to determine the difference between "needs" and "wants" and "would be nice to have's"...
No car necessary "needs" an L&N kit. Even if your IMS fails, you can replace it with the stock unit.
I replaced the IMS with the L&N unit in my '98 Boxster Spec Racecar for piece of mind...did it "need" it? no, the one I removed was just fine.
Yes, the 997 IMS is a better part than the 2002-2004 models, as the early 97-01 part was better as well. Is is perfect? No. Can it still fail? yes indeed.
Would you "want" to replace an item on the car with the best part available? Sure, that's what the L&N kit is...The best part available.
It "would be nice to have" on every motor with an IMS bearing in it. The GT3/Turbo motors do not have one, the DFI motors do not have one. Any other motor it would be "nice to have" in, but not mandatory.
The good part about the '97 to most 2005 motors is that you can install the L&N kit without dissembling the motor. L&N offers upgrades for the 06-08 motors but the engine must come apart to install it.
Lastly, we have installed the kit into a couple of 2005 997S motors, not just the 3.6, as we will be attempting to do on this one. It's hit or miss, depending on the production date. You don't really know until you pull the trans to take a look at it.

Porsche has their own oil separation/crankcase breathing system. But other cars have them in whatever form they decide to use. Some are very simple check valves and a couple of hoses run into the intake.

Wow... A BUNCH of good information here.
mkaraoglan - thank you so much for posting your entire experience. It's unfortunate for you, but I hope that others can benefit from this (it appears that already happened).

update. more bad news
It noe seems that my water pump is shot. Weird coincidence since it's unrelated to the tranny issues.
Add another $1k to my bill....
I had noticed coolant drops when I inspected the underside of my car after the AOS failure while waiting for the tow truck.
