Is this rust on the exhaust?

Cosmoline is applied to new cars and takes quite a while to burn off. The discoloration is normal, and you might smell some hot burning smells for a long time, especially after a hard driving session. No worries...

So does your car have that brown stuff all over your exhaust piping too?

I still have cosmoline in places on mine & it's a 2006. See if it feels plastic or waxy. Also try to rub it off w/ a rag dipped in mineral spirits but make sure the muffler is cold.

It is normal, stainless steel will turn brown'ish/gold'ish on spots were high temperatures are sustained. From looking at your pictures, this is what it looks like.

Okay, if it's from high temperatures, what caused it and how can I get rid of it??

If you want to shine up the muffler try Bar Keepers Friend:

“I am restoring a 1981 DeLorean. This car was manufactured with a stainless steel skin. I’ve been trying to find the right polishing compound to bring the original glow back to the stainless steel. I found Bar Keepers Friend and it has worked wonders – much better than any paste type metal cleaners and a little goes a long way, and it takes a lot less elbow grease.” – Bob in Greely, Ontario
