997.2S oil consumption
Hi all, I've put about 3000 miles on my (new to me) 997.2S, and it's close to 8000 miles total at this point. It's been really hot here in the midwest (about 2.5 weeks straight of 95+ deg temps) and I recently got the "check engine oil level" warning light...to which I added about 1 quart of 0W-40. I know it's normal to consume oil, especially early in the engine's life, but...
is adding about 1.5 quarts over 3000 miles normal ? Mostly highway driving...

Thanks guys...my 3.6 Carrera used a little oil, but I got that one when it had 10k miles on it. I know this 997.2S sat around and was only driven about 2500 miles per year before I got it. I have the impression it needs to be driven aggressively, AND it has been so humid and hot that I bet I'm burning off all the excess 'crap' in the oil with highway driving.

So far, I have only dropped "one bar" over $5,000 miles. It seems like it did so at the first 5K. Over the last 2 oil changes, it has not dropped. I have never had to add any oil.
Of course, if I park the car on a hill, nose down and to the right, it still fills the parking lot with a huge cloud of burnt oil-smoke! When I first got the car, I was losing oil in a hurry that way! I think there is an oil-pickup in that corner of the pan......

Search this forum and you'll find lots of oil consumption threads, especially for 997.2. I have added 3 quarts since I got the car new in 2010 March, at 8000 miles now. (One quart since oil change at beginning of this year) glug glug glug. I check oil level at every gas fill up.

I had to add oil this past weekend as well.
I change my own oil and I am always cautious not to add too much oil. I always check my oil at the end of an oil change and it always reads to the top bar. Now, there is some error associated with the electronic measurement. Even though it was reading at the top bar, it may have been .01qt above the limit to get this reading. Thus, burning .01 qt of oil may have dropped it to the middle bar. My point is that in theory, there is only .41qt (I believe each bar is .4qt -- don't have my owner's manual in front of me) between the highest bar and the "Add Engine Oil" indicator level (the lowest bar out of the 3 segments---not the very bottom Oh s***! bar).
So, burning .41qt, especially if you drive your car with some sort of enthusiasm during the Summer, is definitely not unheard of.

My car ('10 S) burns no oil. Some flat6s burn oil, others do not. I think that a few do not burn oil, a few burn 1qt/600 miles, and the majority burns some oil, say 1qt/2000 miles. The high burners and the no burners make up the tails of the distribution.

You could go as high as adding a quart every 700 miles and still be within the allowed Porsche spec.
1.5 every 3k is fine.

Drive it and check the oil every once in a while. You will determine how much oil your motor uses. It matters not to you how much oil other folks motors use. Find YOUR baseline and add if and when necessary. Great car. Enjoy it.
