Are there cars out there which are substantially better than the 911?

Our beloved 911 is getting its butt kicked in this poll.

Perhaps, but this thread gave me the impression that a lot of people here would vote for the first option (including you?).

Another possibility is that the poll is actually telling us something useful, though it may be too early to say with only 10 votes.

I myself didn't vote, since I haven't driven enough of those exotics, so I can't compare the 911 with them.

Also, I did mention this poll in the Ferrari forum, so those guys may be voting for the last option.

As expected and as is the case.

Not surprising.

For me, there is no *overall* better car than the 911 Turbo. I've got a 997 2S now, and I really enjoy it, I just want some more power, hence wanting to trade up to a 911 Turbo soon.

For me, it's the best all around sports car out there. It's the perfect balance of power, aestethics, handling, comfort, usability, reliability, and being attractive without having to worry too much about crowds of people surrounding your car every time you take it somewhere. Sure, a Ferrari/Lambo/Aston/etc might be a better in some ways, but I think the 911 has the whole package.

Would I love to own a F430 or something similar? Sure, but it would be right alongside a 997 911 Turbo.

Very well put.

No doubt the 911 could be a little flashier and modern looking, more balanced in its aesthetics...but such is life, there is always an issue even with the best "all round" sports car in the world.

It really is very practical. You def can't be daily driving a gallardo, or 458 italia. Weekend cars/track cars.

I dreamt of owning a 911 for over 30 years. I have 4 kids now, one in college and the others on the way. I bought a used 2006 911 C2 just to own one! I had a budget, but absolutely love it. I do plan on the 991 someday....but I would love to keep the first Porsche I ever bought....BOB.

After considering the responses in this thread and other sources, I'm becoming convinced that no other car is "substantially better" than the 911 in terms of objective performance. However, to truly compete with the more powerful sports cars, I do think a 911 probably has to have more power than the base model.

In terms of subjective enjoyment, well ... it's subjective. Many Ferrari guys, for example, will unsurprisingly say their cars are on a level above the 911, but there are plenty of other people who've driven lots of high-end cars and say they like the 911 almost as much, as much, or more than the others.

Bottom line is that the 911 indeed seems to be a "bargain" supercar - at the same general level as cars costing much more. I definitely love my 911S cab, and have no lust to replace it with anything else.

I just purchased a new 911S, the fifth 911 I have owned dating back to 1968. The car I traded in on the new one was a 2009 Nissan GTR. IMO, the GTR is one exceptional automobile. While it may not be a true daily driver and it lacks the sophistication of a 911, it is still a special vehicle. Remarkably fast (mine had 540 whp), it is the easiest car I know to drive at speed and to track. It generated more interest from the public than any car I have owned. Will I miss it? Absolutely! Am I sorry that I traded it?. No, because I wanted a better road car.
