At risk of being stoned to death in this forum, is it possible that Porsche is pushing the 911 into the GT role and making the Cayman/future Cayman the true sports car?

It is very, very hard to look at the rear overhang of that car. There is too much painted surface, it reminds me of the vast uniform expanse of a boat or a C5 Corvette. Quite hideous honestly.

Just what I was thinking. I don't think the value will drop much either!

HOLD the 997.2, unlike the S&P !

The 'sport ute' comment lies at Porsche's feet.

The base Carrera almost looks like a Turbo with the deployed rear wing, really cool!

i disagree with whole concept of making 911 an middle-engine-like car.
they have boxster/cayman/gt for that. even 997 is too big for its own good, 991 gets even bigger, no fun at all.

Magic question - the Targa lease is over in 12 months. Get another one now (break lease early), wait for the 991 Targa, or re-lease the current one? Decisions decisions..

the 991 targa will be magic if they really bring back the old school look.

With all of the lettering on the rear of the 991, I'm not sure how Porsche will be able to fit the red reflector bar seen on the current 4, 4S, Targa 4, Targa 4S & Carrera 4 GTS models (yes, there are a lot of them) and STILL fit this underneath:

P O R S C H E
911 Targa 4S

I like the idea of the true open-top Targa design, but feeling a little sarcastic about some of the design choices of this car.

Keep your current one or see if you can 'steal' a new lease while getting out of current lease early. Too early to tell how the 991 is going to be welcomed once the initial demand subsides, but I think we all know the 997 has the true 911 character in it and will hold a special place, much like the 993 and 930. Not sure about the 991.

Also, we won't see a 4S/Targa/GT3 hit showrooms until 2013 timeframe anyway as the S isn't due to hit until Jan/Feb 2012. If you're going to want anything other than an S, you still have at least 18 months until it's here.

There's a big part of me that really wants to buy out my GTS lease now given the strong interest rates that can be had, but financial prudence is holding me off because of the potential loss of value after 991 launch. BUT, I also plan on my GTS being a keeper, so it makes sense to purchase the car now.

I really like the new 911. The wheelbase is 4 inches longer but overall length is just 2 inches. That means shorter overhangs and better handling and performance. Weight is up only a little....if I remember correctly from what I read. If the extra length means more interior comfort then for the first time, I am really interested in buying a 911.

My father tried to get one for me when I was a kid. I was too big for it.
The 997 was much better but I still felt claustrophobic in it.
The new 991 hopefully airs it out inside. If it does I'll wait one model year then jump on it.
Those of you who think it looks worse than the 997, I'll just wait a while and I'm sure that tune will change.

i guess the 991 c4 and c4s will not get the reflector bar (ever) again.
way to much lettering (agreed) and way too busy for the rear.
and i can`t see how that would nicely fit between those new, thinner taillights. i could be wrong tho. the original targa design is a true winner.
okay, not for all current 997 targa lovers but Porsche offers a solution: save some $$ and take the standard carrera with the big new sunroof
or take the new much cooler 991 retro targa.

Thanks for the input.. I am going to configure one and see what they can do just out of curiosities sake. I would rather get into another lease now and not be rushed to make a decision when they are not making them anymore. My only concern is the $$ factor - I did well on the current one and doubt I will be able to match that.

As per your lease, not really sure buying it out will save you much - I think you are committed to all the payments plus interest for leases, no?

I guess we are all different but the one thing I love about the Targa is the class roof - you can see through it and it sheds an amazing amount of light to the interior of the cabin . From the pictures I have seen of the 991 its not glass but painted mental - not my cup of tea. Second thing I love is the hatch... it opens and I can toss my golf clubs (plus a 2nd) and drive up to the course. I see cab and coupe guys that have to put them in the front seat - secure them like a person so they don't fly around LOL.
