Water pump- a DIY project?
#17
Very close.. There was a hard plastic pipe that needed to be loosened and removed to get the pump out.
Hard to tell how long it took.. had a few beer brakes with my neighbor, lol
I would say 4-5 hours. I tried taking the cats out to provide some room but I couldn't get to a couple of bolts. That was frustrating and took some time experimenting.
If I were to do it again it would take me 2-3 hours max.

Congratulations on your success & thanks for the info. I changed out a water pump on a friends '99 Boxster & had no problems. But this looks like a different animal.

How about the coolant fill and air purging process? Did all you need to do was fill through the reservoir and then open the burp valve with the engine running? How long did you let the engine run, or did you drive around like that for a while? The purging is my only concern because a porsche tech told me that I had to use their vacuum system to refill and purge the air properly. Thanks

The vacuum system is the correct way.

On my friends Boxster because he did not want to spend the money (http://www.eurosportdesign.com/p-373...fill-tool.aspx) or (http://www.tooltopia.com/uview-550000.aspx) on a vacuum tool we did it this way.
We parked the car on a hill (as you know it's hard to find in FL) so that the fill cap was at the highest level, turned on the heater system, as car was warmed up we would burp the system every 2-3 minutes. When the reservoir got low it was refilled w/ the coolant mix. The work was done about a year ago & he has not had to add any more coolant. However I think he took a big chance for $100 savings.
I forgot, here is some info from Renntech:

My water pump went tango uniform last weekend. I called the Porsche 1-800 number and they had a tow truck there in about 40 minutes. My car is a CPO so I never even considered doing it myself. The local dealer installed a new pump, gasket and coolant. So far so good and cannot complain about the price.
