to tint or not to tint

No tint.
Sorry, but for the real purist tint is a little cheezy... Keep it clean, keep it original. No tint.

I just bought a lightly used car that the previous owner had tinted and asked the dealer to rip that stuff out before taking delivery. I think tint (along with chrome wheels or other unnecessary jewelry) can turn a classy car ghetto.

I would say that with today's technology, I would at least get something as close to clear as possible but with the advantages of UV & heat reduction. I think this is a no-brainer.
Personally, I don't like limo (blackout) tint on anything but limos. We had 30% on my wife's last black sedan and it didn't bring any visibility issues or tickets from LE. (this was before the latest advances in ceramic/nano tints).
I think certain tints can actually improve the look of the car, if done both judiciously and expertly; and a car's color can come into play a bit here.. But I'd sure take advantage of today's heat and UV reducing products.
If you do, don't scrimp. Buy the best product, and have the best install it.
YMMV.

I'm not a fan of the look of tinted windows. However, I did the "clear" tint on all the windows of my old 997s (including the front windshield) in order to protect the expensive, carrera red, full leather interior and I was very happy. It didn't look tinted but definitely cut down the heat and presumably the sun damage to the interior. That might be a good option on a cabriolet as I agree, dart tinted windows on a covnertible with the hood down looks odd.

I'll vote for light tint, like the one that Premier offers (Diamond Cut IR). It'll reduce the temp in your cabin but still keep the car classy looking. I had 35% on my M3 and it was a tad too dark for taste.

+1 on that. People should drive a car with tinted windows in the conditions you describe before they have tints applied.

I have 40% and you can still see the interior. Like what the others said, there are shades which are close to clear and you still get protection from the heat.
Most of us here on the left coast feel like it's almost a necessity

I have always tinted my cars. I recently tinted my silver 997 for the following reasons -
1. To get rid of the fishbowl effect.
2. I cannot stand driving the car with the sun glaring on my temples from the side windows.
I am already planning to get rid of it for the following reasons -
1. IMO, the car looks kinda Gh3tto with the tint.
2. The classic porsche looks of the car are compromised with the tint. These cars llok fantastic without the tints.
