engine ticking

after leaving the car in the garage for a few days, i started it up to an unfamiliar sound. the engine was ticking ! the sound clip is me holding my iPhone over the engine…from left side and eventually to the right side.

i can't figure out how to embed the sound clip, so attached is the zip of the file.

any thoughts ?

2007 C4S that just crossed 50,000 miles. It was about 7 deg celcius, so not particularly cold.

hey bud, I'm not to familiar with the non dfi cars but my 997 had a faulty water pump when i had the ticking going off, drove me crazy and then finally to find out it was a simple water pump drove me nuts why i never considered that possibility. hope that helps or is the issue, please others chime in, lets make this a community to help our fellow member please

Sounds normal to me...I have a 2006 C2S. Maybe mine has a problem as well but I've had it for 2 years and sounded like that from day one.

I put the car through the ringer this morning and it seemed like the ticking subsided. It is a helluva lot quieter than my sound clip. Now I gotta deal with the chirping coming from the belt/pulleys. Now that is really annoying !

Thanks to all for your replies. I'm definitely going to keep an eye on it going forward.

I am basing this on owning Pcars from decades past, but my first thought when I hear that is valves. On a a mid 80's Pcar, you start getting that "ticking" you need to start thinking about when to get the top end redone. Not a huge hurry...but you need to start thinking when in the next two years should I do it. On a currrent model...not sure. I would probably get it checked out though as I don't think most people would call that "normal"...at least my car doesn't make that noise on start up.

I bet you are using Mobil 1 ?

My valve train noises went away when I switched to Motul 5w-40 then to Castrol 5w-40 with less noise. I won't go back to Mobil1.

You are correct sir lol. I just bought some Motul 5W40 and am going to give that a try this week. Time to put her away for the winter.

My 2008 C2S does not make that ticking noise. I do not know which oil is currently in the car; it was changed by the dealer before I took delivery. However, I remember that ticking noise from a different (non-Porsche) car I had owned, and I *was* exclusively using Mobil 1 at the time-- so this is an interesting theory.

Also, regarding the chirping noise from the belt, one mechanic's trick I learned was to spray WD-40 on the inside of the belt (the side that contacts the drive pulley) with the engine running so you lubricate the entire length of the belt. This was very counter intuitive, and I thought it would cause the belt to slip even more. I was quite aghast when I saw the mechanic doing this to my car, but it actually worked, and the chirping stopped with no adverse side effects.
