So what is the difference b/w a base car with pasm and sport pasm? Does the pasm regular version have different settings as well?

You can select Sport or Normal with a button on the console. Normal/regular is what most people drive in. Sport, as you'd expect, is what most would use having fun on the back roads. Sport will be stiffer. If you have PASM they are both on the car. If you don't have PASM there is no choice and there is no button.

Ah, makes sense now thanks Alan. Also, this car is an 09' with only 8400 miles on it and it is at a non porsche dealer. Can they do a dme scan there or do i need to. In a car this new what should i do if its not close to a porsche dealer to just cover myself? Also, does the new sport mode add on avail. through suncoast help much on the butt dyno on the 6 speed manual?

You should get a proper PPI (including DME scan) done at a dealership. If that is not possible, you can also look for over-revs using a durametric cable (maybe borrow one from a fellow 6speeded in your area?). You also probably want to look for body damage... This is all best left to professionals who have no emotional link to the transaction IMHO because it is very easy to overlook stuff when you are excited about a new car (at least, it is hard for me) .

In a 6 speed manual car, Sport Mode will change the throttle map to make the throttle more responsive. It _is_ a butt dyno thing and mostly useful at the track when you do not want to have throttle lag.

Hope this helps,

T.

Does a porsche dealer only know how to do a DME or is that something that most any kind of dealership can do?

Strictly speaking, it is something someone who can afford a PIWIS can do... (it is a very expensive diagnostic tool - I have heard $20K/year).

If all you want is overrevs, you can pull those with a Durametric cable (~$300).

Hope this helps,

T.

buy newest car you can afford, from those newest cars choose one with longest warranty if PPI shows no signs of abuse that can prevent warranty coverage (engine over-revs in ranges 4-6)

Don't the cars cut power/fuel before it over revs?
