That thump sound when u close ur door
Do any of you 997 owners notice the thump sound when the door closes? It doesn't have the same thump like the old 993 or older Mercedes. I thought this was just the way newer door latch design sounds. But recently my wife got a 958 cayenne, and it has that classic thump sound! Not sure what is different, but I love that old thump sound. I wonder if the new 991 has similar sound...

Mine sounds like a solid hollow ka-thud. The first time I closed the door, I opened and closed it a number of times because I thought the door didn't latch completely. Then I walked around to the passenger side and the door felt and sounded the same. I'm not digging it , but I suppose it is normal. I'm going to the dealer tomorrow to open and shut some doors. I'll kick around some tires while am at it.

In order to analyze the door shutting sound of the 991, Porsche used an acoustic camera to analyze the point of contact on the door and have supposedly made some significant improvements that are reminiscent of the classic metallic clunk of the air-cooled 911s. I read about this on the recent issue of Christophorus.

I think a lot of it has to do with the door being a "frameless" door. That is having the window glass fully supported by a frame vs. no support.
My '06 GTI has a better sounding door shut than a 997. It has a frame...
That being said the sound from a air-cooled 911 door ranks right up there!

They might be able to adjust the latch, but, they ended up changing my latch, (2007 4S), it quit for a little while?? my 2011 does it, I don't like it, but the last fix didn't last very long, so I have not bothered to take it to the dealership.

And the article on BOSE is kinda interesting, too. Still won't convince me to spend $2K on it though.

One of the things I love about our XC-90. 6 yrs old, 110k and the doors still close like a bank vault.
