B&M Short Shifter

Anyone have a B&M Short Shifter?

What are the pros and cons?

20 years ago I had a Miata and it had a short throw shifter and I really enjoyed it (loved that car, but looked like a Shriner in it).

Curious on feedback about a short throw shifter on the 997. Big improvement?

do it

best mod for the money hands down.... makes the shifts tighter. The gear box is a slop house in stock 991 cars, sorry.... to whom ever thinks iit is great stock hasn't had/driven a car with a great shifter. That said I came from a honda s2000 which is one of the best set ups on any car stock shifter wise... it will never be that good but helped a lot...

yes big improvement

I too had a miata that I turbo'd and the throws on that was pretty short until I bought an S2000. That was the best OE short throw shifter out of all manual cars that I've driven. I went with B&M on my 2005.5 Audi A4 as well as my 06 997C2S. It was a huge improvement. It was a bit notchy when cold. I installed them both. On the 997 install, you have to reuse part of the existing shifter frame which I did not really like because you have to permanently remove the OEM shifter so you can't swap it back. When I traded the car in, I was not able to swap the OEM shifter back in. I was planning to install the Porsche OEM Short shift kit on my 07 997C2S but after I got the car, the throws didn't seem as long as the original shifter on my 06 car.

anyways, from what i read, lots of members (including myself) on the forum went with the OEM SSK rather than the B&M.

its relatively simple swap with the OEM.

Oh so you can't go back to stock when you want to sell? That is a real bummer. Is B&M the only short shift kit? Did it come with full instructions on the install/reusing the exisiting frame or did you have to figure it ot once you had everything torn apart?

I loved the gear box in the Miata. It had what they called a "snick" when you shifted into gear. The snick is really the feel of going into gear and for some unexplainable reason, it really is enjoyable. Does the B&M "snick" into gear?

If you're going to do it, do it right: Go with OEM SSK. I swapped to OEM SSK a few months ago and LOVE IT. I did it myself. While it tested my patience a couple of moments, it was doable.

But ever since, it's so a more enjoyable driving experience.

I put the factory short shift with the shifter console in my 09 C2S and it was a noticeable improvement. It's easy to revert back if you sell the car.

That's interesting. I'm leaning toward the B&M. It sounds better put together (all metal), has a shorter throw, it sounds like it has that "snick" feel I like and is half the price.

really?

If doing it right means using lesser quality parts just because they are stamped Porsche you knocked it out of the park.... sorry, but the B/M kit is built much better. Both great set ups but would go BM all the way for quality and from what I hear for the real enthusiasts a bit tighter of a set up... remember the oem kit is for those that want a shorter throw but still for the masses....so they are not going to make it change from stock all that much. BM is for someone that is seeking out a better, tighter, shorter set up and again much better made...

Not saying OEM is bad but to say doing right is to use oem parts in this case just isn't even close to accurate.

haven't tried the B&M..

and i can't speak for the quality comparison of the material used in both B&M and OEM..

but the feel of Porsche SSK is perfect, imho.

OP, i suggest u try both, if possible, before u decide

Like all things people line up on both sides. Some here have gone from B&M to OEM. Others have made the reverse trip. If you can find a car with each try them out. It's all about what suits you best.

Porsche

Porsche we all love, its a great brand but here is something to consider. They make cars, that is their specialty.... they make/buy solid parts and put them all together to make an amazing car.... But every part they make is not the best it can be? Although sure they would love if everyone thought that.... BM makes transmission and shifter products, this is what they focus on and specialize in 1000% (well sure they have some side ventures but shifters/tranny parts is what they do)

again sure the oem is great and of quality but prefer to go with a kit from a company that has made making such parts their life.... also compare the two kits, one all metal, alloy (BM) and OEM has some plastic parts.

Both great set ups... but have no fear going with BM IMO
