Is there a trick to removing the coolant cap?

Stuck coolant cap
I have to top off my coolant fluid and can't seen to get the blue coolant cap to budge. Did my dealer overtighten it? Any tricks to get it off? Thanks.

While you are at it check the part # on the top of the cap. If it doesn't end in .04 throw it away and go to your dealer a buy a new one that does have .04 as the last two digits in the part #. Your cap may be the reason you have to top off the coolant.

+1 on that. I have had persistent coolant loss through the cap, resolved by replacing it and, importantly, applying Teflon tape to the threads prior to installation, which eases subsequent removal.

Exactly right. I had to do the same, got a .04 a few weeks ago. I had only lost a few cups of coolant, but it was obviously leaking through my old cap. Problem fixed.

There is a silver wire clip that sits on black plastic which is adjacent to the cap & towards the cabin. Lift it up/vertical & it will release any pressure. If that doesn't work & your cap doesn't end in .04 then buy a new one & take a pair of channel locks to the cap.

What years does this apply to? All 997s? Just 997.2s?

996's and 997's probably Caymans and Boxsters too. Part number is 99610644704. The last 04 distinguishes from the earlier 03 - $19 from Suncoast.

A friend of mine has a '99 Boxster that was loosing coolant. I told him to just change the cap to start with. He talked himself into believing it was his water pump. So he changed out a 2 year old water pump. Still had the same coolant problem. Two weeks later he change the hoses. Sill had the same problem. He finally bought the .04 coolant cap & threw away the ~12 year old cap. Problem solved.

I had the .02 cap & it had the "light pink crust" at the base. I was 6 months out of warranty & not covered. When the cap starts to leak you will get a light pink crust that is at the base of the cap. With a coupon it cost me ~ $10.

No recall or TSB just a new, better part.
