Intermediate camshaft bearing failures????

IMS bearing on '07 requires engine tear down to replace as the bearing is designed with it's internal diameter larger than the bearing race in the engine. It can not be pulled out from the outside of the engine. Easiest way to check for potential disaster is to dissect the oil filter at every oil change looking for metal and plastic bits. With that said the issue is really just a " monster in the closet ".
Had no issues with my 7 1/2 yr old Boxster and none with my 5 yr old 997.

The unsaid piece of this is that, finding significant shards in either the filter, the filler plug or the new detection system or wherever, are you going to incur the expense of splitting the cases on a post 05 motor, replace the bearing, close it up and just drive away? I don't think so. What you know is that your motor likely has over time been contaminated with metal and plastic debris from the disintegrating bearing, it's seal and whatever else has been scored or damaged. To be confident that it will not now self destruct from a clogged oil passage or a damaged main bearing or the like you need a rebuild. I don't know what the cost would end up being in that scenario but you may end up going for the crate motor anyway. My money says given the chance you replace the 05 bearing when it is cost efficient. On the later cars just drive them the way they are meant to be driven and don't make yourself crazy.
