Carbon fiber would work just fine in my opinion. Vinyl makes it look more integrated than those add-on plastic surrounds.

Wow been wanting to do this but I wasn't I wasn't sure how it will come out. It definitely looks good on black. Now I'm sold! Just placed my order.

BLKonBLK911C4S is infamous around these parts
I am debating betweenthe ones similar to the TechArt in Carbon Fiber or these vinyl ones in Carbon Fiber or possibly black. I can get a set similar to the TechArt in Carbon Fiber for less than $200 shipped. The vinyl's are a little over $100 shipped (for carbon Fiber), so the cost difference is negligible.

This was mine with plastic rings painted. Yes I know the pic is awful but I cannot find the better ones.

They look pretty good. No issue with them looking like they are glued onto your car (stick up to much)? The vinyl are so thin that they blend into the car and you can hardly see that they are added on top, but they do have a seam.

I wanted to see them glued and not "painted"
Tomorrow I'll find the other pics. Now with the iPad in the airport is too difficult :-(

Are you glad you went this route over the Vinyl's? Or I guess I should ask if you would have been able to purchase them already painted and ready to install would it have been a better choice than the vinyl's? I saw a thread where a couple of the guys with Vinyl were looking to switch out to this type of surround cover.

I love the look! What kind of body kit is on your car? It blends very nice with the curves.

Have you seen clear black gloss on a basalt black 997.1? I just order one but I'm a bit apprehensive on how it will come out.

I actually meant gloss black. Do you sell that red Carrera S sticker on the door as well?

I don't think this one is basalt but similar look.

Sorry for the late answer.
I was not able to find them already painted but my paintshop did the job for 30usd. It's not difficult to place them (I used some hi-temp silicone and some paper tape to keep it in place).
Here a couple more pics:
