Looking at a 997 C2S in L.A.

As an aside, what I also noticed in my p car searches - the more money you have to spend, the less (not none..) questionable/unscrupulous sellers you'll end up dealing with.
The guy I bought my 997.2 from was a surgeon in Mississippi who was completely OCD about his Porsche but wasn't getting enough opportunities to drive it. Oh, and he wanted the money because he was going to be buying a new S Class when it comes out this year. He was my kind of seller.

I found this 911 C2 in Houston, it has a clean car fax and service records from Porsche of houston. I have been looking at it for some time now. They told me the car is on consignment from a person friend, and on the car fax it says it was a CPO car. They are willing to come down to get to my budget for the car. What do you guys think?

I'd pass on it. From your description it sounds like a typical used car salesman speech. Take a close look at the engine bay photo of that 2007 car. Now take a look at what an OCD 2009 engine bay looks like. Notice a difference? I'd keep looking for something that looks like it's been well looked after. Getting lots of hi-res photos will give you some sense of how well the car may have been treated. It of course isn't the whole story, but if someone cares enough to have pictures like this, there is a good chance the rest of the car has been treated well also.

I'm a little confused, first board members point out some cars out there that are a good deal and low priced. I find a similar low priced deal and now it's a pass? If it would pass a PIP and they really do have the the service history this might be a good buy. I really appreciate all the input but confused as to how to buy a used Porsche 911? It's like picking a needle in the haystack. Plus all this worry about IMS and RM failure? Not sure if a used Porsche is worth it?

As for your observation. If money was completely no object, you are right, don't buy a used car. Unfortunately, that's not always an option for folks.

It's not for everyone, but you're on the right track. Littlemore research and you'll be excited to invest in a great car and lifestyle.
I enjoyed the research process. Maybe drop in on a club event, see some cars, meet some folks and ask tons of questions. You'll be set.
Stick it out. You'll be glad you did.

48k miles is a lot?!? Chances are this engine has proved itself. A garage queen 5k miles in 6 years did not have enough use to show any issues.
PAG knows that in the US their warranty does not cost much. They know that Americans do not drive their cars and no issues will crop up during the warranty...
A well driven Porsche should last well beyond 200k miles.

Anyone in the LA area know this dealer? Any opinions? (be good) Any suggestions on where to do a PPI in the Redondo Beach area?

Remember, opinions are like a**holes - everyone has one. You must set your own priorities and only you can decide on what car is a match. These boards are invaluable in my opinion as they can provide lots and lots of detail and prior experience, but you could easily drive yourself nuts thinking you can consolidate everyone's opinion into one to help you make your mind up. You can't, so don't try.

I knew about this forum before I purchased my car but I didn't seek advise here. Bought enough cars over the years...but after I purchased the car found out about all the different experiances people have had. This input can help out a lot, but it can also fill your mind with questions. This will lead to over analyzing the purchase.
My experiance was great, despite being a newbie and not having a lot of knowledge of Porsche's. I wanted to buy local and keep my money local...but for me...I got lucky. Low mileage car, heavly optioned. Some may say I paid too much others may say I got a good deal. It's all up to you and what uou want and can afford. Don't worry about mileage if the car appears to be taken car of. I plan on driving mine as much as possible, keeping it maintained so if I want to upgrade in the future, I can sell it to someone looking for a lower priced Pcar but taken car of.
Good luck.

+1 for Raider. IMHO though, you always pay for what you get, but you don't always get what you pay for. A few years ago, I too was a Porsche newbe and lucked out with a great 996 C4S (high miler). After getting experience with this car, I upgraded, but this time I wanted a CPO; felt it was worth the extra to have Porsche's assurance. Only Porsche dealers, can put the Porsche CPO on the car. At that I wound up with a 2008 with 35k miles, and everything that could be questioned was replaced/updated (ex: the tires weren't at 80% so they replaced them). On top of that I received the CPO for an additional 24 months. Yes, I paid a little more, but I felt it was worth it (FYI - I'm in the Auto business, just not Porsche). As I mentioned in a prior post, be careful, when a dealer sells a car which looks too cheap. A dealer can assess a car better than anyone and is in the business to make a fair profit; therefore the price should be fair, not too much nor too little. Take your time, and look for a private party with a good inspection or a dealer with an outstanding reputation (on top of that a CPO is always an outstanding thing to have).

I spoke to the the person selling the car. Seems like a small consignment dealership. She says the owner is a personal friend and, and she is helping him out. Looks like they are not hiding anything and dose not sound shady at all. They are emailing me all the service records on the car from Porsche North Houston. I'll see how the PPI turns out, I'm having it done at TGA in Houston, here http://www.t-g-a.com/. Someone on rennlist recommended them, I'll make a decision from there. No way to be too careful. As far as being to low, I have seen a few 07 911 C2's for about $44,000. This one seem to have only a few basic options, only nav and the upgraded wheels. This maybe why a lower price vs. other 911 with lots more options.

Here is an example of what looks like a car worth further investigating. It's not a tip, but it is loaded with great options. It should give you a really good idea of what availability is out there. Be patient, don't rush into a purchase and keep searching - you WILL find the perfect car. I spent the majority of my time on ebay and cars.com to get a good idea of what the market for used p cars was like. Here is a link from cars.com.

To clarify one thing Goldduster said, only a dealer can initially CPO the car, but it is my understanding that if you then decide to sell your CPO car to another private party the warranty transfers to the new owner. If a dealer resells it, then the CPO is gone. I don't know how Porsche keeps track of that.
Here's a nice C2, probably well taken care of, with leftover CPO warranty at a reasonable price:

I also have to agree with what Raiders said, if you read the forums enough you'll end up overanalyzing every potential nightmare scenario. I've passed on two cars which would probably have been wonderful because I couldn't sleep at night thinking about all the impending engine failures. As many have pointed out before, though, for each lemon you hear about there have to be hundreds of other cars that are relatively problem free if well maintained. I guess you just have to do your due diligence and then take your chances or get a warranty, which will eventually run out too.
This search can be agonizing, but I guess you just have to be patient. Good luck with your search (I hope mine ends soon too!)
