not one manual 911 at local dealership

I think Porsche's own website has credibility when it comes to their stance on whether their cars are performance oriented or not.
If it's about feel....then maybe you should remove the power steering and abs on your car.
It's good to have choices but to discredit a technology just because it doesn't suit your preference is a little stupid (i'm not directing this to anybody, just a general comment). If the manual transmission goes the way of the dodo bird, i won't shed a tear (i have both manual and PDK cars).

as per my post, I'm talking about their stance not what they think about their technology.

I don't think anyone is denying that the PDK is not a performance transmission. What they are saying is that it is not as involving as a manual and is one more step in taking the driver out of the loop (because a computer is faster and better than a human). Let's face it, moving your finger 1/2" to change gears is a lot less involving than finding the clutch's engaging point and feeling the shift-lever engage as they say "like a bolt-action rifle".
Soon (actually Google is already testing this), we'll have cars that not only change the gears for you but also steer and brake. Technologists will again say yeah the computer can find the ideal drive line and optimum braking points so therefore anyone that wants to steer and brake for themselves is a dinosaur.

When cars switched to pneumatic tires, I gave up motorsports entirely.

Yep. If I could re-design the clutch, I would have 10 gears because that gives you 4 more chances to shift and lose power. Then they could rename the site 10speedonline. Who on earth would anyone want a transmission that delivers smooth, uninterrupted delivery of the engine power to the wheels? Boooooring.
Well, I'm sure performance is important to some people. But I would never sacrifice the feeling of a clutch for a trivial 0.4sec improvement in 0-60, perfectly rev-matched downshifts, protection against engine-destroying money-shifts, and the ability to power launch many times without wearing down my clutch.
In fact, I disabled my power steering because it ruins the road feel, and that pesky starter motor, I swapped out for a hand crank.
#2 You really think Porsche is not about performance? Interesting... I'd suspect Porsche would disagree (I'd check out their website for supporting evidence).

I really couldn't tell if you were joking at first, or passively aggressively trying to justify your position, but after reading these two posts, I no longer care. Good stuff!!!!

You manual guys need to ease up on PDK. You might as well be busting on comfortable shoes, walkers with handbrakes, or casino pants. You can be as smarmy as you want about it now, but someday you'll be damned glad somebody invented it.

... Casino pants...

None of us are bad-mouthing the PDK. It is one of the finest automatic transmissions out there. It's just that it seems that all high-end sports cars are starting to feel the same where all you have to do is mash the throttle and the car takes car of everything else. In fact, if you're after outright performance, there are better cars out there (Nissan GTR for example) for less money.
Maybe it's a sign of these crazy times we're living in but it seems that you'll soon have to pay a premium to get a manual transmission. One of the reasons I admire Porsche is that they still offer that option.
Maybe it's just me but I always have that little bit of satisfaction in doing a nicely coordinated heel-and-toe downshift or simply just rowing the gears on an early weekend morning. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned and/or nostalgic?

Let answer your question with a question - what average age of person likes to go slower, and enjoy the ride?

As I said in my initial post, Ferry Porsche would never approve of a 911 that is evolving into a boulevardier. Basically that's what happened to the Corvette when it went from Sting Ray to Stingray. What's next, hair transplants and gold chains?
