Cayman w/ X51 questions

I just bought a 2006 Cayman S that was converted by Farnbacher Loles [defunct] in 2008 to what they called a GTR. It got a crate 3.8L X51 engine, custom exhaust, 3rd radiator, "sport" clutch, Quaiffe LSD, Bilstein coilovers, wheels/tires, etc. I picked it up outside Boston Thurs. and drove it back to Memphis. Clutch is stiff, radio tuner sucks, but exhaust note is awesome!

Frankly, I'm not sure where the 997 S ends and Cayman starts. E.g. power steering pump - I assume that would be Cayman, right? But what about the pulley? I will do DEs in the car and if the PS pump is Cayman I will put on an underdrive pulley and LN inline cooler. So do I order a Cayman or 997 pulley? Or are they the same anyway?

Any other suggestions on what might be what, and care and feeding of this engine, will be most appreciated.

Bill/Memphis

I'd go by the part numbers for a direct replacement parts. For the under drive pully, start with the Porsche part number then get the under drive pully that replaces that specific Porsche numbered pully on your engine.

Uh, I guess that means I have to expose the engine, and I don't know how at this point, and the Owner's Manual doesn't even say. :-/

But wouldn't you think the pulleys would come already on the engine? I.e. they would be the 3.8 ones. Anyone have a recommendation for a pulley?

Exposing the engine is easy...

First, using a butter knife or a pry tool, pull up on the leading edge of the carpeted engine cover. Once you can grasp it with your hands, lift the cover off.

Next, back out the 5 torx screws (I forget the size) on the aluminum cover that sits below the carpeted cover.

as with any custom built (race) car best advice is to find the builder and try to ask him about car details. somebody must have left from that shop somewhere, unless they all were murdered by mafia.

for engine if it has stock M97 engine you need to make sure it got accusump system of X51 pan or _anything_ done to prevent oil starvation in corners. croc with a 3.8 motor will be decently fast, if it was built properly it will last long enough for you to have plenty of fun.

"if it has stock M97 engine you need to make sure it got accusump system o[r] X51 pan ..."

"It got a crate 3.8L X51 engine..."

"croc with a 3.8 motor will be decently fast"

Farnbacher claimed 410 hp, 188 mph top speed. I'll take their word for it. Should be about as quick as a Cayman can be short of a turbo.

"unless you are racing i am not sure what is the point"

The point is that I will be doing DEs (PCA instructor) and the pulley is to address the other CS shortcoming. If you guys don't think it is necessary I'd just as soon not spend money on things I don't need.

For DEs it is not needed, you have plenty of power as it is, if builder did a decent job car should be ok as it is.

It's not for power, it's to slow down the power steering pump to help (along w/ the inline cooler) keep it from overheating, a common Cayman track problem. I spoke to Spencer ***, who was w/ Farnbacher Loles when the car was built, and now has his own business - Speedsport - in the same shop, and he said that I did need to address the PS issue.

So why not have Spencer *** fix whatever issues you think you have with the car rather than play 20 questions with folks on this forum ? Not only is he familiar with the car and work at the shop that built it, it sounds like he has knowledge and where-with-all to address your concerns in his own shop.

*** is in Danbury, CT; I am in Memphis.
I stated at the outset that I was going to change the pulley, what I've asked here is if the pulley would be a 997 or Cayman, and, if the former, if anyone had a recommendation. By my count that essentially makes 2 questions.
