Blown Engine Help me find a new 3.8
I need some advice on how to locate a new or used engine for my 2005 Carrera S. My core is probably not reusable as it has a hole in it.
Where should I look?
What prices should I expect to pay?

first option is buying use motor and swap them. Use motor no core run about 15k-20k depends on demand and supply at the moment. Labor will cost you about $2500-$4000 depends on shop or mechanic charge.
Second option is buying a re-manufacture from Porsche Dealer that will run you about 17K with some limited warranty. You pay more labor at dealer and if you don't do at dealer they limit you more on warranty stuff or even not warranty it.
third option is open it up and see what's really happen. in this case you will need to pay about $1500-$2000 to take everything apart and diagnose what happen. In this case if you decide to keep going with the shop that open your engine. They might wave the $1500 labor to open it or they will just include that to your total. If you go to shop that has a lot of part ready then you might get through this easier than some other shop.
I went through this situation and trust me it's not that bad. You have to know who you talk to and who to work on your car.
PM me your contact information and we can go more from there.
I do really wanna help you because I just recently blew my motor and asking for help but got all people talk **** about how stupid I drove or karma decal my car , being poser all bullsheit.
I really feel you about your lost. Contact me I'll guide you through.

If I had to guess it was a broken rod or cracked liner resulting is everything flying apart. I don't think it is IMS related because I had the LNEngineering one put in. (Proactively because I didn't want my engine flying apart)

Anyone have an extra 997.1 3.8 engine lying around?
There has to be guys with extra engines accumulating. My personal collection of VW bug engines is breeding I think. But those just won’t do.

Have you tried los angeles auto dismantlers? http://www.ladismantler.com I saw they had a 997.1 S engine for sale, complete, 16k with 22k miles.
You might also call the high speed performance shops around the US that specialize in Porsche builds. There is always a chance someone built a race car and has something lying around.

LA dismantlers wants an additional core charge. I don't have a core. I think the price is way too high for a used engine.

Have you contacted them to ask if they'll take a lower price? In general they will drop a good amount off their posted prices when you actually contact them about buying something. I wouldn't be surprised if they'll drop $3-4k off their price even without a core to exchange.

You may also want to check with dC automotive. They are a large used parts reseller, similar to LA dismantlers. Good luck in your search.
