Water Pump Leak?? question!!

Car is at local indy shop and I was notified that I need to change my water pump becuase there is a leak. Car is 06 C2s with 38k miles and tech showed me what looks to be dried light pink residue. There is no moist, or drip at the the moment and my coolant is slighlty below minimum mark.
do the water pump go bad this early? do I really need to change the water pump or could be the bolt that needs to be tightened up?
I wanted to hear form you guys what do you think?

I replaced my water pump last summer at a little over 60,000 miles. There was a significant leak under the car.

Mine was replaced under warranty at roughly 24,000 miles. There were no external signs of water leaking. The dealer caught the problem during my annual service inspection. Since it was covered by warranty, I didn't ask too many questions.

I find it little strange that it will go so soon, I don't have any drip or wet spot but I am not taking any chance since I have DE this weekend.

Mine failed at about 40k miles last year. Was covered under warranty.

Its more than the mileage. You've got a 6-7 year old car. Not all that unusual to replace a pump at that age of a vehicle. Look at it this way though - you didn't overheat the engine, as the failure was found before you had a much bigger problem. That's a GOOD thing from my perspective. Too bad about your CPO though...go figure, right? A waterpump on 'most' cars is a very reasonable DIY. Given some of the work required to access a pump on a 997 though (there is a nice write up in the DIY section), it still might be worth it to pay your Indie.

You know, now that I think about it, the REAL question you should ask the group (based on how great the input of experiences are), 'I see that many folks have been complaining of '06's with cracked coolant reservoirs (yes, most with much higher mileage, etc.), and since I'm replacing my pump, should I also do the plastic reservoir'?

'Typically' you should never replace something that hasn't failed, but since you are already doing 3/4 the labor and parts to repair the coolant loop, you might as well do this as well. Thoughts class?

Actually, to me, the germane question is, do you trust your mechanic? If so, you needn't ask here. If not, you need another mechanic. I don't take my vehicles to anyone that I don't completely trust. Either find another mechanic or rely on his advice. No one here, over the internet, can out diagnose someone who has your car. I've driven over 180,000 miles on three different Porsches and only replaced one water pump on my current car at 55,000 miles.

I just replaced mine at 40 000 km recently. Noticed a pinkish patch of water on the floor under the pump.

Before that it started to have a squeaky bearing noise coming from it.

Cost me about 800 to replace it.

Mine was leaking at 24k. None of it ever made it to my garage floor, but I was adding coolant every couple of months and finally looked under the car and noticed some pink crusty residue around a couple of the bolts under there.

Sounds legit to me. Do it.
