Grinding going into 5th gear?

I am noticing that when the engine is cold, shifting in the 5th at about 65-70 mph it will make this quick nasty grinding noise. If I shift very slowly and gentle it won't do it. Once the oil temp reaches 200F it's not an issue.

What do you think it is? Shifter cable adjustment, need new gear fluid (68k on odo) or..?

Same exact issue with mine now. Surprised no one responded yet! Did the problem get resolved?

For reference, all of my 911's never had issues with 'cold' shifting into fifth. I do know that cold weather/engine/tranny affects the 1st-gear shifting.

a differential oil change couldn't hurt, fairly inexpensive if you do it yourself

Before filling up, let us know if the level was low to begin with. I am still unfamiliar with the 997 tranny, but on the 915 tranny, the higher gears tend to get lower lubrication if low or when the car isn't used enough.

I did change the manual trans fluid- no improvement at all..
However, my shifter cable broke and I replaced it with new cables (there are two). It shifts amazingly smooth now! But the 5th still grinds when shifting fast.. Oh well.

I'm having a similar problem. Grinds shifting into 5th gear. I did noticed this started happening after an oil change and perhaps the trans fluid was not changed. I'll look into this.

i had the same issue. Had the 5th gear synchro replaced under warranty and no issues ever since.

Sounds like a synchro. Definitely have a shop take a look. At 68k, warranty probably isn't available. But still ask the dealer if they will replace under a "good faith" claim.
