Texas Approves Highest Speed Limit In Country At 85 MPH
85 MPH on a stretch of highway from San Antonio to Austin, TX. YES!
I go there every now and then and it'll be great to not worry about going much over the speed limit - I figure I'll cruise at 90.

I understand...it's sad I can't just hop in my car and drive as fast as I want anymore. I used to cruise at 130 mph every day of the week, which didn't feel overly quick. At around 150 it started to.

No worries. I figure there's typically 5 mph tolerance and kind of fun not worrying about the speed limit. I'd love to drive the autobahn and even more the green mile

Green mile? You mean the Green Hell? (Nurburgring)

This is great news for N. America. Sure the Autobahn is better... or several othe freeways in Europe etc, but the point is that Texas is taking a lead to reinforce the idea that both road construction as well as vehicle technologies have improved greatly in the past 25 years. Moving the limit up is only reasonable, and I hope more jurisdictions do this sooner-than-later. As for my hometown, Vancouver... you're lucky to find only a few highways in British Columbia that go as high as 110km/hr (a mere 67 mph). What the hell?!? Good for Texas...

It's actually a strange location, from Seguin to Austin where it picks up the new toll by-pass which passes right by the Circuit of the Americas. For sure I could get to Austin quicker from downtown SA just taking 35. SA to Seguin is out of the way. For sure I'll driv e it at some point, maybe on my way to the F1 race in November.
America will never replicate the autobahn as Americans are not rules oriented enough to drive those speeds safely. The autobahns only work because Germans obey the rules religiously, and they are safety fanatics (cars are not allowed to drive damaged and modifying cars legally is made very difficult thanks to having to meet TUV requirements). What else makes the autobahns work are trucks are limited to 62 mpg and they don't drive in the left lane. Nor at night nor Sundays. Plus they don't allow retreads there so the autobahns aren't littered with pealed away rubber. 85 is probably all America deserves.
