991 vs GTS
#32
People rarely look back when dropping $100k on a car.
Anyway, the GTS is a decent bargain as many people bought them while they were simply waiting for their 991S's to come in. You can find many simply "dumped". The GTS is a great car with the aero front end, powerkit and the Alcantara. It is a valid point though that 991's are also being sold considerably off sticker - something that really hasn't happened before on Porsche model introductions. Before a GTS, I'd look at a Mezger turbo instead. Much more power and no RMS issues. The turbo will be a classic; the GTS will be old in a few years.

The GTS has RMS issues as well? I thought this problem was exclusive to GT3's for some reason.
I've looked at 07-08 turbos, and I am still considering this.
Thing is, I love the .2 dynamic headlights and rear LEDs, the new tech, the center locking wheels, and the updated steering wheel that the GTS offers (among other things).
A 2010 turbo has all those goodies but no mezger.

There are NO RMS issues with 997.2 cars. It is a different engine, introducing direct injection, and the intermediate shaft and bearing have been eliminated. Most RMS leaks were actually IMS bearing and bearing seal failures. The engines in Gen 2 997s are greatly improved. Fear not! I will add that my 2001 Boxster S, purchased new, now has 107K miles on the clock and suffered no such difficulties. I recently took preventive measures, though. I'm not a fool.
With respect to Merger turbos, I have no knowledge from which to preach. I will say, however, that I dislike forced induction. And power for power's sake is just silly. The GTS has plenty of power.
I question the assertion that piles of "dumped" GTSs are everywhere, neglected and unwanted. Just a touch of hyperbole, don't you think? Sheesh.

I love how common this dilemma is amongst Porsche enthusiasts ... This is like the Obama/Romney debate of 911's.

I drove a GTS last week btw. It felt good. One weird note was there was a weird whistle coming from the driver side window at speeds over 50 ish

pretty hard to ignore the wide body, power kit, black rims, PDK and PSE, SS door guards, slip differential, the alcantara, the front end, launch control...hmmm...the 991S has PDCC, PTV, bigger interior, that crazy sloping console (which many Korean cars have btw), 20" rims...hmm.

Well, I drove back to back yesterday, GTS coupe (PDK, sport suspension) and then a 991S (PDK with PDCC). OK, to me being 6'3", it was hands down that I liked the 991S better when you factor in interior room. The GTS was great, don't get me wrong (Carrara white with all the goodies), but for me to move from a 997S, the 991 just makes more sense in terms of a change. The GTS definitely felt more raw, a bit more reckless, and looks great in white with the wide body. I'll also say the sport exhaust isn't nearly as impactful as it is on the 991 - they really opened up the exhaust on the 991. Both cars are great, and fast with PDK - but the PDK even felt different on the 991, like it was a little quicker responding, but that could just be the feel. I'd say if I had a 997.1 a GTS would make more sense. If you haven't driven a PDK 991S with PDCC and the PSE, I recommend you do so.
