991 vs GTS
#3
Last February I was in the same position and after driving both, I chose the GTS. To me, the GTS just felt harder driving, more raw, and just a really direct feel to driver, probably a result of the electronic steering vs hydraulic. There was also something about getting into the first batch of 991's that scared me a little with bugs and recalls. I love my GTS and don't regret the decision at all. The driving experience you get with a GTS is simply incredible. In the end, I feel like I got the 997 that Porsche had years to perfect. In a few years I'll probably look into the 991 GT3 or 991 Turbo, but I'll take my GTS over a 991S any day.

I was in the market for a Porsche earlier this summer (I got an R8 V10 instead). But it did drive the 991 and the GTS back to back.
I was very underwhelmed by the 991. On paper it's a genius bit of kit, the numbers are super fast, the dynamics are spot on. But it was dull to drive. It might BE fast and exciting, but it didn't feel fast and exciting. It felt like a car built for golfers not drivers.
The GTS on the other hand was an amazing experience. It might be slower, but it always felt faster. For me it was the better experience. And I did not feel the interior was much worse. I liked the seats better, steering better and the feel of the engine. It felt like a car built for drivers.
But I'm biased towards cars that give you an experience not just numbers. For me that's like rating wine on alcohol content alone. What's the experience of driving and owning it like? What will excite you? Are you a TRUE Sportscar guy, or do you prefer fast luxury? Is the latest more important than the greatest etc.
So many personal factors. I'm sure someone will make a very reasoned case for the 991.

I was in the same shoes as you guys. Really liked both but got a crazy deal on a GTS so I moved on it. The GTS feels more raw and that was the feel I was looking for. 991S just felt to blah for me but is a very awesome car to drive and on paper.

Drove my brother's 991S, 7 speed manual and loved the power and new interior.
Bought a 997.2 C4 GTS and, while slower, feel more connected to the road.
They're both great cars and good deals to be had on both currently.

991 and GTS/997 are both great cars in their own rights.
The average driver will never be able to extract the full potential of any modern day Porsche.
I'm just guessing but probably 90% the members on this board are normal drivers (non-pro, non-track)
With that said, if you really want raw, get an Elise/Boxster Spyder

I had the same situation. Got a deal on a 2012 4 GTS, bought it. Several weeks later, went to Porsche road show and drove the 991, 991S, and the Panamera GTS. I had it all set up on sport plus, PSE and PASM on. The 991S was fast and powerful, but it was a refined one. It was the best one of the three. On the way home, I set up my GTS the same, and it felt more raw. Like I had no control. The revs were crazy compared to the 991S.
FWIW, I'm new to Porsche, (not to fast cars) and I was glad that I chose the GTS. Like someone posted, I would also wait for a 991 GT3.

Like my other post I went with the GTS due to raw power feel. Now that I have the car chipped, exhaust, filters, bypass exhaust, and short shift the car is a beast and a blast to drive. Plus I saved a ton of money not going with the 991S.

I just recently traded up from my 2006 C2S for a 2012 C4GTS. I chose the GTS over a 991S after driving both cars. I didn't think the 991S was significantly (if any) faster (I won't be tracking the car anyway), and the raw feel of the GTS was definitely more fun to drive. Although I do like several of the enhancements with the 991S, I too am a bit skeptical about buying the first of a new generation and I knew what I was getting with the 997.

well from all the mods I did im probably around 440-450hp. The gains are really nice and very raw power. Its like night and day when im up and over 5krpm. Totally fun and puts a huge smile on my face when I punch it and it sound so mean.
