I think I just had the IMS failure

Congratulations on becoming the latest poster child of why comprehensive warranty coverage on expensive cars makes good sense. Regardless of the final diagnosis, it sounds pretty serious and at least you can rest easy knowing that the cost to get the car back on the road won't be on your shoulders. That is great news, period.
Best of luck, and please do update us with photographs. I can't wait for another several pages of IMS debates. Whoohoo! :-)

Maybe they will make a mistake and give it a 997.2 c2s heart!

Aftermarket Warranties are great, as long as they have good coverage... I remember one customer with a 996 that had an IMS failure... Written right into the poor dude's warranty contract- They would cover damages up to $3500... After that, they considered the warranty totally fulfilled... Buyer beware!!!

Jophiel hope your warranty can cover a new engine, I wish you look.

The IMS failed on my Boxster after about 4 years and 45k miles.
The aftermarket warranty tried every trick in the book but eventually paid around $15k for a new crate engine from Stuttgart plus installation (the warranty was like $3k)
Just make sure you have a fully documented service record.

Jophiel, I'm aware the early production 997 (i.e 2005) used a smaller IMS bearing (similiar to the one used on the 996). Around mid-2005, a larger revised IMS bearing was used.
I am curious to know if your engine had the smaller or larger IMS bearing? If you are not sure, you can provide me your engine number (this number is printed on the left side of the engine) and I can look it up.

Thankfully I don't have a ceiling on my policy. One of the things I made sure of when I read the contract.

I don't want to guess as to what the reason for the seal failure was. We'll know more when the OP gets the diagnosis from the dealership. But like you guys, I've been intrigued by the pervasiveness of the IMS failures or as some would argue internet hype associated with it. Conversely, I've also seen the threads that start out innocent (and please don't flame me, I'm making no assumptions here) but then transfer to bad owner behavior (money shifting, etc.) that led to the engine failure. I'm sure one of the first things this dealership will do is look at the DME. It all should be quite interesting to see the forensic analysis they perform on this poor car. And it was a silver 997 like mine. Sad....

Damn... sad sight anytime but an extra gut punch here as still on t-tags
Glad your warranty will make you whole. Did you buy car at a p-dealer?
Good luck and cheers to hoping all your troubles are out of the way early!

I feel your pain, not a happy situation!
I hope your warranty comes through for you, but I have to say I am not a fan of aftermarket warranties. I had one of the largest providers of these plans as a corporate client a few years back and they were the most unethical group I have ever dealt with!
Not a good situation when they get your money up front and you have to depend on them doing the right thing. I would never buy a used Pcar without a CPO factory warranty, particularly a non turbo 996 or 997.1!
