When I was in the market, Rusnak Porsche had an exact color-year-mile car that was being introduced to me. The low miles was very tempting.

Having been educated (somewhat) on possible IMS issue, I went ahead and bought something else. Do you happen to know if your car was ever in California being sold by any Porsche dealer?

Sorry to hear about the issue...must be a terrible feeling.

My car is also a '05 C2S. I have 46K miles and drive fairly regulary, but am outside warranty and am waiting for the clutch to go out to upgrade the IMS. Anyone have a good feel for how long a typical clutch lasts in a C2S?

I am assuming my clutch is factory, but I am second owner so I am not sure, picked it up around 37K miles as a CPO.

In general, clutch life depends on the use (or abuse) by the driver. Other factors would be highway miles vs city miles.

But then again, I'll let everyoe chime in.

Please find out if you had the smaller bearing or the revised larger bearing.

Hella...I was under the impression all '05 model had the weaker IMS and it wasn't until early model year '06 that the upgraded bearings show up. Is that not the case?

Is there a good way to check? Some type of code on the door or whatever? A site where you can input VIN or engine code?

It was changed mid 2005. If you run your VIN you should be able to get the engine serial number. You could also ask the dealer. My car was built in late 2005 and I have the revised larger bearing and wold be curious.

yes, if you know your engine number then there is a way to know if you have the smaller or larger revised IMS bearing. You can find the number etched on the left side of the engine. See pic (I got this pic from a rennlist member (dan)).

i was particular in looking for an early 2005 so that once i do the clutch i am able to replace the IMS easily at the same time for peace of mind- in the later 2005-2008 to get to the IMS you have to split the engine apart-

Holden,

So, after having found the number, how does one find out if a newer bearing is present? Is there a code within the number? Does one go to another site, plug in the engine number, and the site/software would show the part #?

I am just curious.

Thanks.

7 year car, with 10,000 miles... that's like 1400 miles a year. these cars like to be driven. Sold my 2002 996 (same engine as the 2005 997) with 167,000 miles... never an issue.

Good luck and thank god you have a warranty

The car was originally a California car. That being said, the likelihood that its the same car is still quite small. I don't have the carfax in front of me (its at home), but I believe the first owner owned the car from 2005 to 2012.

Do you happen to know the VIN of the car that you were offered?

See my post above. The company is CNA national. I have their most comprehensive package. I bought it directly through the dealership (mostly because of a "vanishing deductible" meaning that if any warranty work is done by the dealer, I pay 0 out of pocket).
