Center Console Rattle

I have a rattle noise coming from the center console that is annoying. Fairly constant, if I put my hand on it it push it slightly it goes away. It is coming from the cover over the gear shifter (auto) and the area around the ashtray as far as I can tell - you know how hard it is to isolate though.

Anyone else experience this? Ideas to remedy?

Had same. It was the wheel bearings. Look at driveline. For ages, thought it was console plastic against plastic. Replaced bearings and it's now SILENT.

The wheel bearings sounded like a rattling center console? Who figured that one out?

I had the exact same problem on my 2006 C4S. My tires were running pretty slick (Michelin PS/2) and the noise was driving me crazy.

I replaced the tires with Michelin Pilot Super Sport, on all four wheels this weekend. It is a different car, so much smoother and silent now. The rattle in the middle console? Completely gone! Not a trace of it.

On the C4S, the viscous coupler located right below the console acts up if the front and rear tires do not have the same exact circumference, due to wearing out. I suspect that the harsh ride of the PS/2 coupled with the stress on the viscous coupler was causing that infamous noise.

Now, since you are driving a C2S, the viscous theory does not apply for you.

By the way, I love these tires.

Look underneath the console cover. There are two little rubber plugs about a 1/4" in diameter on each side of the lid,I'll bet your missing one! Although...I have a manual. When I first purchased my 06 C2S one had to be replaced.

In my car, it was the roof switch for the Targa roof that was rattling a bit. If you press on the area and the rattling stops, then the sound isn't tires or bearings... those items may just be sending vibrations that cause the rattle to be heard, but the items that would be rattling would still be prone to rattle with the next uneven road surface. Any hard surface-to-hard-surface mating could be the cause.
