Sell or Keep???

Even though the production numbers are high, I would think that in the next decade the 997’s depreciation would be on a lesser curve than the 996. If only from an aesthetic standpoint, let alone mechanical.
On a different point, I think that the only car that could pull me away from my 06CS would be an 07-08 turbo. That’s a car that should retain value in the long run, but as someone mentioned- these cars in general are not viable investments. (I wonder if buyers felt that way when they put down three grand in 1955 for a Speedster)?

It's amazes me about all the owners out there that are worried so much about a depreciating factor rather than the nostalgic drive factor? If your that shallow and never wanted the car that much than sell it (unless for an upgraded Porsche)pretty simple decision to me?"Porsche There Is No Substitute"!

hey golenjeeptj you are forgetting man maths.
man maths generally goes like this. I could buy a new golf gti cost 33 k for a nice spec one. Run it for two years and sell for 18k. Cost of ownership over two years is 15k. Or I could buy a 997 2007 for 50 and two years layer it is worth 40k. This way I only loose 10k. There fore Porsche is the more economical buy. Be tter fun, faster etc etc.
now we could figure in cost of running but that doesn't work in the favor of my man maths so I will conviently forget it. Also I want Porsche so my memory gets very faded to the economics. l then use this badly concieved calculation to justify my Porsche purchase. Now I have the car and I see my already bad calculation might be wrong as 997 maybe only worth 35k in two years panic sets in. I'm not using the car enough, or money would be better invested elsewhere etc etc
this is what hapened to a friend. I can personally see the strength of the arguement that from a finacial standpoint money is better elsewhere. However personally the 911 is something I wanted forever and for the moment that is a worthwhile investment for me.

your arguement with the golf gti makes NO sense .
you are comparing depreciation on a NEW vs USED car.
imagine how much you would lose in two years on a NEW 911?
i do understand where you are coming from..
but i believe the 997 will hold its ground on re-sale value. Options will be a huge factor IMO.
two years ago was when i bought my 911.
i think it was an awesome time to buy one, because depreciation so far was close to none.

To me the best Poesche owner is the one who never sells his cars and holds on to them as much as possible untill his children go hungry.
I will never sell my Porsches as long as I can afford it and as illogical as it may seem. I love those cars and have given a lot of me to maintain them.
But that is me and the rest are free to do as they please.

who said man maths has to make sense . I agree a new gti is bot great comparison either is new to old. Was more just an example of how we can justify purchasing things when we really know it from an economic stand point may not be the best decision.
on depreciation my dad purchased 3 911s the first two he sold for same money he paid for them the last he sold for more.
Mad how much more these cars depreciate than they used to.

This is kind of like saying:
when I married my wife she was young, needed little and gravity had not taken its toll.
Now she is not that young, needs a lot more , and you can see the signs of time.
You do not divorce because of that.
You stay with your wife because you love her (or you are ugly and no one else would be with you)

Let's say I wanted to re-up to a 2011 911 S or Turbo in a few years. How much should I drive my car now and when should I sell? In 2018 is someone going to want a 2006 911s with 80k on it? And for how much?
#26
There will always be someone who would want a 12 yr old porsche with 80k. The question is will you be ready to part with it at that price.
Currently a 2001 911 sells for about 20-28 k depending on lots of factors

In regard to that question 3point8 you are asking how much a piece of string is. The fact is the more you drive it the more it will depreciate. However what the price difference between a car that has done 60k and one that has done 70k is anyone's bet.
You bought the car to experience driving it so if you get the opportunity enjoy it. The values of the 2011 cars are going to be dropping faster in terms of dollars amounts that your car will so I wouldn't worry about it.
@ Tiyyara you could have some real fun with the wife analogy . I mean lets be honest most of us here would happily trade our cars in for the latest model. Depreciation is also a bit like a divorce the longer you wait the more cash you loose . As you said though love keeps you holding on....now what's the mistress in this equation...perhaps the daily driver
