Exhaust Problems

The exhaust on my 2006 911S makes a raddling sound when I start it up. The sound goes away in a few seconds. What the heck is going on?

Maybe a loose clamp or a bad weld. Are you sure it is the exhaust and not something like a stuck lifter?

Thank you. I'm not totally sure. What is a stuck lifter?

Like GS997S stated, it could be something like a loose clamp or a bad weld. I also think some of this rattling is normal when the car is cold. Just for kicks, you may want to check to make sure your license plate is nice & tight.

You may also want to open the engine compartment and have someone else start the car to see if you can narrow the noise location down.

They all kind of do this when cold, sort of like a baffle is loose or something, but then the sound goes away. That's just the way the 997 exhaust sounds upon cold start up.

Listen to these videos. These cars have modified exhausts, but if your car sounds similar when cold, the rattle sound is normal.

Thanks so much. Makes sense and good to know. I heard the sound and started to panic. Appreciate the insight.

This is accurate. My 2006 911 S does the same thing on a cold start (only 9K miles). Everything is tight. What was really scary was when I had not started the car in about 2 months (it is at my second home) and the engine warning light came on and the sound was not comforting. I drove it immediately to the dealer about 1/4 mile away and the sound of a valve about to loose it began to subside. The mechanic asked when the last time I drove the car, said 2 months ago. He said it was normal, all of the oil had run down to the lowest point of the engine. He said get the car out and run it for a good hour--Porsches are meant to run! In about 15 minutes of driving it down PCH, all was well and she was performing like new!

Mine does the same thing, took it to dealer and left it overnight so they could hear it start when ice cold. They checked it over and said it was perfectly normal.
