Removing tips from exhaust

I just replaced the stock exhaust system of my 2012 C4S 997.2 with a FVD PDK Sport system. I will be putting up for sale the mufflers and the tips but I need help removing the tips from the mufflers.

I never saw a nut like the one holding the tip to the exhaust. Can somebody please let me know what is it call and what kind of tool do I need to remove it?

TIA

Moises

I believe it's called an "external" Torx socket. The size is either E10 or E13.

I ran into the same issue when I took my exhaust off a little while back.

Hi Bill:

Thanks for the quick reply.
Yes, that is exactly what I am talking about.
I did a google search and couldn't find and E-13, so I am thinking it should be a E-10.
Can anyone confirm before I order the wrench?

TIA

Moises,
Take a pic and share. We carry a lot of these types of bits and may have one in a store near you. Sears should also carry practically anything you need without having to order one online.
If you know exactly what it is PM me and I will tell you if there is one around you.

Sears has E-10 external torx socket for $3.16. I am not sure if it's the right size though.

I picked up a cheap set of 3/8" sockets at PEP Boys for $10-$13.00.
It was a packet of four sockets and contained both the E 10 and E 13...That's why I'm not sure of the exact size. You can also check Amazon.

Hope this helps.

I am the tool/electronics buyer for pep boys. We have a 4 piece internal e socket set in every store. Comes with 8,10,12 and 14 mm sizes. It's $10. Not that I care about a $10 sale just giving you a heads up that its in a store. Love to get some feedback on the tools.

^^^^^^
Those are the sockets that I purchased. (not sure where I got E 13)
I thought the quality of the pieces was quite good, given the price.

They were more than up for the task of loosening the nut on the exhaust clamp....

Cool. Did you get them from us? Developed that Gearhead line of tools about 2 years ago. Took til last year to get it on the floor. Mostly made in Taiwan. Much better factories than china.

Just read your post. Thanks

I had same problem with my exhaust tips, I found at Lowe's sockets called "Kobalt 31-Piece Xtreme Access 3/8-in and 1/4-in Drive Socket Set", Item #: 379759 | Model #: 86236. They sell for about $50 for the set of 31. These are great because they fit 12-point, Rounded, Spline, Star and Square nuts. Case is small and easily fits in 911 trunk as well.

Thanks for the info. That set seems pretty handy. However, I would like to buy a dedicated wrench for this job.

Hi windboat. Thanks for sharing.
Do you recall the exact size you use to remove the external torx for the exhaust tips?
Do you has PSE? If yes, maybe the size of the external torx would be different than the one used for my "S" tips?

I do not recall the size, but the great thing about the Lowe's kit is that you have a wide selection of sizes. I do remember that the tip and the clamp nuts were the same size. (I do not work for Lowe's)

I did upgrade to PSE and hoping to sell the original tips and cans on eBay.

Guys,

MMK,
It's a socket not a wrench. I don't believe anyone makes a specific wrench in that application. you can use any standard 3/8" ratchet.

I hope no one thought I was trying to peddle goods here. I relayed who I was as a matter of integrity. I do +$50M a year in hand tools alone. A $10 sale will not make or break me.
A fellow member on here asked for assistance and I thought I would save him the hassle of guessing since I know what he needed. My apologies to anyone who thought otherwise.

As a hardcore car guy I made sure we added tools to the plan o gram that were all encompassing including stuff like e-sockets, 12 point, security, triple square(needed for porsche, audi and vw), XZN, ribe and torx plus that are not normally found outside of online so that when you are working on your European car you don't have to stop doing the job for lack of a tool.

Sorry for anyone who thought my intents were anything but helping someone out.

Moises,
I just checked and the correct size is E12 (put the correct socket on the bolt)

That said, it will be tough to beat the price of the PEP Boys sockets, if you have one in your neighborhood. They'll mount right up to a standard 3/8" socket wrench.

Hope this helps,
Bill

Caesar, please don't take my comment that I don't work for Lowe 's as a shot at you or your employer. My comment was certainly never meant to be a personal shot at anyone.
