Should I bother with after market spark plugs?

Greetings. I wondered if anyone here has had good or bad experience with the after market spark plugs which claim improved gas mileage and modest performance improvement? My 997.2 is bone stock and my daily driver, I do not track. Thank you.

Don't risk it...

Knowing the risk of galling due to unknown spark plug threads that weren't quite exact... I've read about them on other folk's BMW motorcycles and Porsche engine threads. Rethreading the spark plug ports your engine isn't a trivial task (it's so tight in there that you probably have to drop the engine to do it right.)

Hi Jance, good point, I was not aware of that issue. From the little reading I have done, it seems the spark plugs or pulse plugs which claim better mpg and/or performance all say they have a hotter spark. Without long term testing of these plugs, I am not sure they will work well in the 997.2 engine. They could melt the top of the pistons or cause some kind of problem with the ignition system. It is difficult to get information from the manufacturers. I thought if any of these work better, the racing/track crowd would know.

I can not PM until I have 15 posts and I am new to this forum and to Porsche ownership in general. Can you PM me where you get your car serviced, I would appreciate trading notes on that kind of thing.

Thanks again,

John

new owner too!

I do my own work for small maintenance items. I did my own 60K service, installed my own Beltronics STI-R radar detector, but I'll left the IMS replacement to http://www.chrisgerman.com/

We should hook up sometime and chat at Marymoore park one sunny weekend!

Improved performance would be minimal at best.
Gas mileage would be affected more by driving habits.

Gosh, I was just told by the mfg that the 1000+ hp car on the cover of the most recent Porsche Mag uses PulsePlugs from EnerPulse. That is interesting.

I guess no one on this forum has used after market plugs and has any real world experience with them.

Jance, are you a member of the local chapter of PCA? I am going to the local chapter's tech session at Gerber Motorsports on 27 April so perhaps we will meet there. Otherwise, meeting at Marymoore Park sounds great.

You must remember through that that was a complete makeover.
Not just switching plugs. It's the culmination of a whole bunch of things.

Many here have done many mods from exhausts to superchargers.
Your post is a bit confusing as you want both a performance increase and better fuel mileage. Usually, one is traded for the other.

Hi Wc11. Sorry for the confusion with my post. To clarify, I wondered if anyone here has had experience, good or bad, with after market plugs on a stock or near stock 997.2 engine and what their experience was. I have noticed that some mfgs of after market plugs claim better mpg or better performance, or both. I am somewhat skeptical of these claims and am also concerned that using an after market plug in a stock or near stock engine may damage the engine/ignition system. However, I have a lot to learn about these engines and wanted to explore this area a bit with more experienced people.

I am not understanding this thread. Porsche does not manufacture spark plugs, and spark plugs are an item that is replaced per routine maintenance. So, what is "aftermarket" in that context?

To the OP, Porsche could use any spark plug they want. Got to believe they use the ones they feel offer the best performance for the ignition system they utilize on the engines they design and warranty for 4 years. Why second guess them ?
