cabriolet question re:top down->windows up

I'm new to a 997 turbo cabriolet and can't seem to find this in the manual or by searching forums...

When I hold the switch to put the top down, why do the windows then go back up automatically? I can't easily see when the top mechanism has completed until the windows start to go up, then I have to lower both main windows after putting the top down. Can this be defeated or is there an easy way to stop at this point? Also, no way to do things without continuously holding the switch, right?

I don't usually like to have the windows up with the top down--I'm not sure why this seems to be the default option.

Not sure why, that's just what they do. Doesn't bother me enough to question the dealer on if it can be defeated so I can't help you there, sorry.

Both of those problems can be rectified with installation of a smarttop from mods4cars, unfortunately it's a 400 add on.

I bought my car used. so I was hoping for the unit to be in there... I tried entering in "programing mode" but nothing happend...
according to smarttop manual:

All programming is done by using the onboard computer stalk on the lower left side of the steering column (1) and the two green turn signal (indicator) arrows. Functions are indicated by the left arrow (2) and their settings are indicated by the right arrow (3). Navigation is done by pushing the stalk up (next function) or down (previous function) and settings changed by pushing the stalk (increase setting by one) or pulling the stalk (decreasing setting by one). Each time either a new function is selected (UP/DOWN) or a function's setting (setting) is changed (PUSH/PULL), the arrows will indicate the new status by first blinking the function (left arrow) and then the setting (right arrow). To enter programming mode, first make sure the key is not in the ignition lock and all doors are unlocked. Pull and hold the stalk until the left arrow blinks once to indicate function 1. Now let go of the stalk.

It will be the best $400 you spend on the car.

Also check the for sale items. Occasionally they show up.

So clearly that's what I'll have to do... I just bought the car (used) so I guess I'll have to pause a couple months until my wife doesn't notice. I would love a one touch top down as I struggle a bit to shift and hold that button!
Can anyone tell me, does this just override some of the pcm/sport chrono settings? For example, I see it does passenger mirror adjust when backing up, which could be redundant to the sport chrono memory of this setting.
Looks like a fun/easy install, though.

I just don't see the benefit. Is holding the button in the car as opposed to the FOB that different?

When each arm is around a lady friend/model and one hand is smoothing out my full head of long hair while the other is dragging a 90lb bag of $100 bills, it really is awkward to adjust to hold down a button for a few extra seconds. Granted my muscular arms can do it, but it just feels too busy.

The windows go up to complete the top lower cycle. With the wind deflector up and the windows up, this set up reduces the wind turbulence in the vehicle while driving at higher speeds. The next time you take the car in for service, just request them to reprogram the cycle so the windows do not go up to end the cycle.

but your dealer will charge $400 to do this windows reprogram.
So you are better buying the smartTOP for the same price and be able to open the top remotly with the car key

My wifes BMW was able to be opened with the key, we used it this many times "0". I love toys but I just don't get it with this. And I live in AZ, daily driver, my top goes up/down 2 x a day minimum 6 mo a yr.

I like the idea of parking the car, walking to the store while closing the top with the remote key.
walk out of the store while opening the top remotly.

at this point it's just preferances. that's what tuning is all about :-)

I just installed my smarttop, only took about 20 min. Very nice to have the one touch up and down (hated holding down that damned button) and to bring the top up and down from outside. Mine goes up and down a lot as I keep golf clubs in the back and I always put the top down to put them in or take them out.

THe fob button is for openning the top when you're not in it. The fob button unlocks the car and will open the top, should you desire same, as you approach it. Hot day, cars closed up, you want top down before you get in....hold the fob button for a couple seconds and let go, top goes down - cars unlocked. works the other way for opposite results.

The smart top feature for use with the switch/button in the car allows you to hit the button and let go for one touch openning and closing. Smart top has other features like closing all the windows with the stalk after you turn the car off, no need to reinsert the key if you forget. Of course, people who never forget to close windows before turning off their car or don't want to open/close the top the easy way shouldn't get a SmartTop.

This...

I almost have the windows up with the top down. Too windy and cold otherwise. Of course, this largely depends on how the weather is.
