My budget audio install updated 3/22/15

On a different note, is anyone concerned about the weight of the Focals? Based on my guesstimate, they are probably 3-5 times heavier (and longer) than the factory. My concern is that the factory mounting section would actually break after some time with all of the thousand bouncing of the car.
My plates are two pieces with the inside piece resting on the cutout lip hoping that I have vertical weight support as opposed to just screws.

That's a good call. I only used the higher series because I got them very cheap.
Glad your tweeters cleared the covers, if you mount the speakers from the rear that is less of an issue, but would make it very difficult to install without removing the panel. (Actually impossible as you need to mount the speakers first, then you have nothing to hold onto when mounting the plate to the car panel. ) As you can see on Redwine702's pics, that pro just took out the panels. Installing without the panel removal is a much better diy approach though. Well done.

Fyi, I was able to remove the tweeter to get more height room. I was planning on installing the 100's using the same layout as the factory (i.e., separate mids and tweets). Problem is, I got lazy (hahahah).
My point is that if someone wants to separate the tweets, it is do-able.
Oh, and I did not like seeing the mid with an empty pipe just sticking out in the middle.

Right. That was another point that drove me to use an abs plate. The stock plate is way too flimsy. I don't think it would support the weight of the 100s.

And I think the section "where" the stock plate mounts is somewhat questionable also.

I guess we just uncovered the ethos of the bose upgrade. Weight! Thats the best soind porsche could get for the weight. As we all know weight has always been a consideration.
Ok back to regular programming.
Rye, putting the speakers at the back of the plate will remove the problem of tweeter hitting cover but can we fit that panel with the speakers installed into the hole? One can temporarily fit hooks with self taping screws so you could hold the plate while screwing it on. But question really is can you put it in the hole with the spekaer installed?
Also, if the concern of cab is really an issue, then mounting the soeakers from the ourside will be a better options as it puts better weight distribution on the surrounding mounting panel
I am now asuming that the rear oem is a 2 component system with the speakers connected in parallel sharing the same wire from the amp without any separate crossover.
Ok back to regular programming.

With the speakers attached to the back of the plate, little chance of connecting them without removing the panel, but it's just part of adventure ;-)
The rears are fed by a single speaker wire and are parallel.

Try it and let us know! You might be right. It is an odd size, I never considered it.
#268
Well, here are my pics. The rears were top-mounted with the plate --- they basically just slide into the hole. No panel removal is needed.
Due to the weight of the Focals, I designed the plate so that the plates' inner smaller piece will use the mounting hole as a "cradle".

Material is 1/4" high grade MDF. I have extra laying around in the garage. No interference.
