DIY Porsche 997 Key Shell Transplant
#33
My case for my '07 C4s broke. It is a 2-button model.
I see that at least 2 eBay vendors sell the case. Which one did you guys buy? I don't mind paying the more expensive one as long as it works.
Thanks.

The shell replacements come from China and I would venture to say that they're from the same factory and the Amazon vendors are only Middlemen.

I bought from here.

I bought the first one just to be sure that it would work and everything was fine (hello auto) . I bought the second shell replacement unknowingly from the second vendor (auto aftermarket), but also had no issues.

The ones you bought have the Porsche Crest, correct? No fading yet? I was thinking about keeping my old one and transfer the crest (if and when the replacement fob starts fading).

If you do end up getting the 3 button for your coupe, the third button is pretty solid (it doesn't jiggle around or feel cheap), but it just doesn't do anything when you press it.
(By the way, I am still using the key shell I had photographed for this post, and it has held up really well with time).

Correct? If not, I'll just buy the 2-button unit.

Good question. One ine I used the crest from my old key and the other I used the new crest. I saved the extra ones in area either get chipped or worn. They have been fine so far.

I bought one and did this transfer yesterday and I'm so glad I did. My silver 997.1 keys are worn out and broken from multiple falls. I shall do it for the second key - quality is absolutely great! can't tell it apart from the 997.2 key. Highly recommended for those who's keys are over 10 years old and broken like mine.

I think that Porsche should have moved into the 21st century and have gotten rid of this "jailer's key" al ong time ago. Case in point, I love my MB key and even something like my son's old VW Passat key that's square and has a jackknife key blade would be a welcome alternative.

The reason the 997.1 to 997.2 transplant works is the buttons and underlying electronic control board is the same size. You just swap out the outer plastic shell.
You might be able to hack the metal key and transponder in an Audi or VW switchblade type key. I can visualize the metal key working in the door and the ignition if you can fit the transponder pill too. But I don't see how the control electronics board and buttons can be transplanted. So you would likely lose the wireless lock/unlock and frunk features.
